What is the best power plant for a 85 Hilux? Be it ULP or Diesel.

No need in saying V6 or V8. Already priced them, and I ain't going that over board on something that is going to get damaged/written Off...

You can easily have your v6 for under 3k lol a commo v6 is supercheap and adaptors are easy to find even an older 5ltr v8 is cheap enough..
The 3ltr diesels go well, I drove one the other day with a dts turbo kit and it flew ! But I assume it would blow your budget abit..
In the end it comes down to what you want.. cheap I would go v6, reliability 3ltr td, fun and sound v8 5ltr with blower haha

The Lux will be used to go wheeling more then just driving around town (the VZ is the daily drive).

Would re building the 3y - e that is fitted to the Lux ATM be a good option? Or just wait till it gives out and then do a motor exchange? I'm asking this as it seams to get up to the speed limit ATM. Not sure what it is like off road. Will be doing some beach work this weekend, so will see how it gose there I suppose.

Well the 3y went quite well. So will have to have a hard think about what I'll end up doing...

Well what about a 4y? I don't know much about the petrol motors but I assume its bigger and better than the 3y. Or perhaps a 22r like the yanks run, but as I said before I have no idea how it would bolt up ect, but they have a fair amount of aftermarket support from America and are cheap to source over here...

go the 22r if ease is what you are after, cheap as s@#t, go all day. if you want a headache with awesome end results try a 1uzfe. whole cars are cheap. i just bought one for a motor swap for $1300 inc rego to sept 2013. $400 bucks for harness from states, half that to adapt for surf auto transfer and a few cooling system mods, a couple of 40 series engine mounts and you got mumbo. i have put them in a few hilux's with mixed results, mostly good, even did a hiace. left the diesel badge on the back, was a weapon. just ask the pushbike rider that leaned on the side and didnt get going before i gave it a bootfull. ha ha. still clipped into the pedals on his side in the middle of the intersection. piss funny.

Ok, I have found a complete bell-housing conversion kit. Comes with shafts and all for $350.

My concerns is the add says it's for a 1988-1989, however he is unsure. But surly the gearboxes wouldn't be that different?

O, this is for a V6 conversion....

i had a 4y carb in my 83 model lux full motor rebuild with higher compression (10;1) and very mild port and polished head, extractors and exhaust and a weber carb with hi flow filter and it went really well.no power house but definately something i would look at doing.
simply buy a 4y (cheap as chips if u look around)
put a weber carb on it and some extractors and exhaust and it would go just as well as any 22r and no modifying shit.
just my 2cents.

im doing v6 conversion using a vt commodore ecotec and my budget is 3k and i am around half way through and the most expensive bits are done.just gotta put exhaust on and efi fuel pump and radiator hoses.

cheers..smiley..

Ok, well I'll be picking up the kit tomorrow. Then track down the engine mounts and wiring kit.

Now the next question.

I want to fit another transfer case so I have 2. Is this easy done? and is it worth it?

Do a search on here or google it. Theres heaps of info about installing duel cases. You could even look on the locktup site or the Marlin site.
