Head cracked or gasket blown>
He would need a full kit of sockets and spanners, screw drivers etc BUT if he is a mechanic he will have them.
Straight swap of gasket about 3-4 hours for a pro, 10 hours for a newbie

How do you know the head is cracked if you have not had it removed yet? Usually only the head shop can tell that with a crack test.

i'm no expert but there are a few ways to 'guarentee' the head is cracked. pressurised water system or exhaust gases in the cooling system are two ways. i had both happen to my utes in a matter of weeks earlier in the year. i've been told by a reliable source that nissan don't usually blow the gasket, they crack the head. my 2cents anyway
