screaming gearbox .....

60 series 2F motor with a H55F box......

mine sounds like 50 tom cats surounding 1 female cat in heat at 2:00am, transfer or box I cant pick which it is, so it repair or replace ...... :cool:



Questions......

what models is this box available in
do I just look for a 60series box or is it available in say a 75 or 80 series aswell :roll:


was there any differance between what was behind the diesel motor and the petrol motor :?


is the howling banshee that lives under the floorpan an easy repairer,
IE: is the howl a common problem and there are kits out there for the simple repair?


any way of testing to see if its gearbox or transfer issues ?






few helpfull hints.....

1st gear...... quiet as a mouse :armsup:
2nd gear..... very small hint of a bearing, but you have to listen hard to detect it, not always detectable :cool:
3rd gear...... obvious wine apparent, much like a reverse gear wine
4th gear ..... extreamly loud wine..... increase stereo volume to muffle
5th gear ..... full noise on the stereo and reach for the ear muffs

reverse ...... normal



noise is only there when the driveline is under load, acceleration or decelleration inspires the banshee, whilst a gentle roll without loading the driveline see's silence


thoughts ?????

It is from somewhere after the output shaft of the gearbox (as noise increase with road speed) this could be centre bearing or anyting in the tcase. Unless you had a balance tube b/w gearbox and tcase I would have a guess that your transfer case has lost all oil and is hating on life.

Assuming it's the transfer case then it's not a hard bit of kit to overhaul as long as the gears aren't cactus. I recently had mine apart to do a bearing and it's not that technical inside. The gearbox on the other hand has always been source of mystery with all kinds of mechanical sorcery and trickery.

IIRC the 60 uses the same H55F box as 75 series cruisers with a 1HZ. IH8MUD can probably confirm this although the ratios may be different.

Sorry ,but whining loudly is NOT a common thing for any cruiser gearbox. A little bit maybe but what you describe is indeed a gearbox or transfer case "hating on life" as so funnily put.

Same box and transfer can be found in any petrol or diesel (FJ and HJ) 60 and 75 series. The only difference will be that some models use a vacuum operated transfer case which is not too hard to swap back to normal shift if you have all the parts.

Thanks for clearing that up ray.

Is the vacuum shift just a matter of changing out the snout on the output of the transfer case?

Are you sure it's not a diff??? It would make more sense, more speed, more noise.

I haven't had to do it myself but I think you just have to swap over the shaft with detent ball, spring and lever, then the manual levers. A few write ups on ih8mud if you want to have a read. Otherwise you could always retain the vac shift arrangement and setup a vac solonoid/switch to control it. There are also some write ups on ih8mud about that.

I saw a write up recently an the swap was very simple apart from needing to drill out a blank casting for a detent switch (I think that was it)

When I put my early 60 series H55f into my truck it had a "screaming banshee" like noise in all gears , I bought the box cheap cos it had "a bit of bearing noise" according to the guy I bought it off, but it was deafening with the v8 driving it.
Mine turned out to be the g/box input shaft bearing. The hardening was coming off the inner race. The noise was there under accel an decel but as soon as i pushed the clutch in it went away. I rebuilt both the gearbox an transfer for under $900nz using terrain tamer kits.

Confirming this pretty much the case..

if you have a manual shift transfer case with the same size idler shaft then its just a matter of swapping out the front of the transfer case and the actuating arm for the gear linkages. The linkage arms are at different angles and it took me a while to figure out thats why i couldn't hook up the 4wd lever.

noise does'nt increase in pitch as speed increases, it stays within its limited range of grumblings and repeats that grumbling range in the next gear

dropped the rear shaft off and drove it on the front diff, noise was just the same..

insert red face...... :oops:


diff bearing kit fitted


no more grumblings


the large bearing on the pinion shaft was absolutely knackered, severe brenelling on the bearing shell along with 2 major trenches carved equally accross the surface.


picked up the problem when I got under the cruiser and used the tailshaft to assist in my movements under the rig...... the tailshaft shouldnt move ..... atleast not up n down and most certainly not fowards n backwards

tightened the pinion nut a full turn and this alone removed ~50% of the noise......
the kit removed all the noise

:D
