Just wondering which drivetrain is stronger; the GU or GQ? I.e. diffs, tailshafts, gearbox, transfer case etc.

I believe all the drivetrains are the same.
WITH THE EXCEPTION of..
GU diffs - bigger and stronger.
GU brakes - some of the upper market GU's have bigger brakes (twinpistons)

GU and GQ have the front diff the same size (slight differences to the internals apparently), 233mm crownwheel. Otherwise the GU has bigger CV's on the front axle than GQ.
All GQ and some GU rear diffs are 233mm
Some GU's have the big mother 260mm rear diff
I think some of the GQ leaf sprung traybacks are a bit different and might have the large rear diff?? or maybe this was the MQ trayback??
GU manual gearboxes (at least those behind the 4.2 and 4.5 and 3.0ITD) shift a bit smoother than the same box found in the GQ. more synchros or something. But some GU boxes wore out the splines on 5th.
5 speed behind the 3.0 petrol in GQ is smaller, and is the same as the 2.8td GQ. I think this box is also found behind the 2.8td and 2.8itd in the GU.
All tailshafts are the same apart from the GQ trayback having a double cardan on the front shaft apparently. Not sure if GU trays had this too?
Transfer cases are all the same. (is the flange or something different when the gearbox was from the 3.0 petrol or 2.8td??)
So generally the GU stuff is GQ stuff, but a bit stronger or refined.
Anyone with corrections to the above, feel free to post it up

Have heard that GQ boxes in 4.2 are stronger than GU 4.2.It might not have anything to do with the box but the stronger GU diffs bringing the stress to the gear box ?

Brakes are diffrent in some GU's
GUI: all engines can fit 15" rims
GUII: ZD30 and TD42 only

The GQ 4.2d & 4.2tb 5spd are steel cased and i think the GU 4.2 is alliuminum. definatly no pto outlet any more and no pto gear but the gear also disappeared in some gq in 97.

GU
Early GQ are known for certain weaknesses (especially diffs).
Early GU 3 litre diesels excluded... known to be weak engines but rest of drivetrain (but for rims) good.

GQ tierods and steering components stronger than GU to compensate for the extra weight of the drivetrain.

GQ utes have the big tie rod ends
