Which drivetrain is stronger; 80 or 100 series?

Just wondering which drivetrain is stronger out of the two landcruiser models?

The 1hz 100 series gearbox is from a prado and not as strong as the 80 ones,but all other t/d and 1fz boxes are thesame h151 as an 80.
The rear diff on a 105 has larger brgs and studs on outer axles, so it should be stronger, though there is usually no problem running either.
Ratios are higher on 80's at 4.1, 100's run 4.3 in petrol and 1hz, Front diffs on both are the weak spot, even more so with the independant front diff of a 105.
Does that cover it?

it's the 100 series' with the independent front end (not 105)

also transfer cases are more or less identical 80/10x series.

The 100's t/d and v8 run 4.1 whereas the 105 solid diffs are 4.3ratio.

so have there been many problems with the 1HZ gearbox? anything u can do to beef it or replace it?

The 1hz box in a 105 is a prado r151 box, it changes nice but falls appart with turbos and the weight on the 105, especially if it is 3 tonnes.
Mates std with turbo did 3rd at 180000kms, cost 1800 to fix. Now the 80 1hz had a h150 box, it has a lower first gear to the h151 turbo diesel box out of the 80 series and t/d 105. Both of these boxes can be put behind the 1hz 105 and are alot stronger. A new transfer out of a petrol 105 or a t/d will also be required, the r151 transfer wont fit the h151.
Putting a h150/1 in the 105 will see you with a trouble free box that is a little more truck like in its shifting.
Now if u were to do that, there would be quite an interest in your r151 for the v8 lowlux brigade...

Ive got a standard 1hz 100 series thats done 180000klm and i have towed a one and a half ton van around the country with it without any problems i think its really how you treat them.

I've got a 99, 100 series with a 1hz diesel and an after market turbo. So far with 135,000km's on the clock I have managed to break 4 front diff centres. Apparently where the collasable washer is on the pinion, under extreme load it compresses even more which inturn allows it to pull away from the crown wheel and you end up chipping teeth. Hopefully the solution is to replace the collasable washer with a steel shim. I will let you know how we go. We are also going to cryagenicly treat both the crown and pinion wheel, to make them stronger.

Toyota wont tell u they have a design problem with the hemisphere having 2 great windows in it unsupporting the ring gear.
Putting an ARB locker or for that matter, a hilux limited slip ctr in there will strengthern it up 100% from the std hemilphere. You did them reversing right? Common problem 80 and 105

I don't believe the teeth are being chipped through reversing. I,m paraniod about backing up in four wheel drive as it is. This thing off mine runs 285/75/16 cooper st's with a rear arb diff lock and admittily some of the tracks we do are a bit on the wild side for a vehicle that large. We continually lift front wheels and its only when we get home and drain the oil do we find bits of teeth attatch to the magnet of the diff plug. Other than that you wouldn,t know there is a problem. Could you please tell me what modle Hilux diff centre I can use and what modifications are needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jono

Any lux ctr that is LSD 4 pinion will fit in the front centre. The axles then need to be shoetened a little bit as the ctr side gears are a little different.
Alternately, an ARB ctr (if u already have one in the back) would be nice.
If you check out the crown and pinion teeth, you will see the reversing lands are cut at 45 deg to eachother, compared to straight in forward direction. Putting load on them in reverse tends to spread the teeth appart,under the windows in the hemi chipping the ends of the teeth, or destroying them completely.

from memery its the v6 4runner lsd hemi that fits 80 sieres
but in some models you need to use the v6 bearings & caps
in the 80s case to make it fit

marlins & allpro do the solid pinion tube coms with packing shims
