Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi. Are the return to center steering damper any use to cars mainly used for road use? Do they meke the steering any heavier when turning?

Don't waste your money, if your suspension is set up correctly then you won't need one. People tend to use them to mask problems. Just get a normal steering damper of decent quality.

It will be harder on your steering box and u may notice it being a tad heavier.

I totally agree with cranky.
They do make steering heavier when parking etc, add strain on steering box, are lest effective right at the centre point, they don't 'fix' anything.
i removed the one I fitted.

Buy a quality damper and save a few $$

If anything they add to the problems and magnify wobbles and wondering. They are only used when running huge tyres. At full lock the bigger heavy tyres are leaning right over at full camber, they releave pressure on components as the spring help lift them back up when returning steering to centre.

I have a HZJ73 middie - the previous owner had installed a RTC damper and reckoned it really improved it. Compared with my BJ70 it drives way better and almost car like. However, I feel that that it is too weighted and makes the steering quite heavy and quite a pain off road. Suspect it could make your steering box wear out more quickly although I haven't got any evidence for that.
