80 series air con troubles

Ive just had the clutch on my AC compressor give out :bad-words: It's that worn that the pulley is wobbling around by hand- I removed the belt.

Can I just replace the clutch on the front without interrupting the pump? Ie, so I won't need to regas it? It's only been gassed about 1000kms ago.

I thought the reason for the clutch going boom is tht the pump may have siezed. But I can turn the pump via a socket on the front bolt. It's a bit stiff but it turns.

Is this common? How do I remove the clutch? How much is a new/2nd hand pump?

Cheers
Luke.

is it the clutch or just the idler bearing? the bearing is replaceable and they do die, especially if you drive without the air con running.
new compressor + gas + receiver/drier should be in the $400 - $500 ballpark.

I believe the bearing can be replaced with compressor still in the car, no need to re-gas.

I haven't personally done this, but read about it on lcool, or offroad80s.

Easy job.
Undo bolt at front, best to lock in clutch with belt still on.
Remove very front part, don't drop or loose small washer that spaces out clutch from pully. This is a set thickness.
Look in and remove funny shaped circlip. Pully part should slip off from housing, leaving only electromagnet. Bearing is inside pully part.

It's easier on a diesel because the compressor is mounted high up.

It's fiddlier on a 1fz petrol. You can do it by removing the fan and shroud.

Dunno about a 3f. If you have a 3f burn it out and claim insurance.
