G'day all.
I am in Nambour on the sunshine coast. I read a topic on kombi4x4 on this site.
this is my long term project in the sense of thinking about how to achieve a mid engine 4x4 bay kombi after a lot of laying under a lot of 4x4's looking for the right size front spindle's I finally found the early rodeo's the closest & easiest to modify to fit so here goes from front to back in order I nave been collecting parts so far the kombi cost $1600
transfer case $15.00
complete gearbox with tailshaft & shifter with linkages $200.00
motor $113.75
commodore diffs $50.00 each
late falcon heavy duty radiator with fans $35.00
Rodeo front assembly's complete with good disc's & calipers $15.00
Rover 3.5 injected v8
Hiace diesel 5speed alloy case remote shifter adapted vie a Dellow housing
Nissan 720 transfer case
Vt v6 auto commodore IRS differential's the rear LSD
front hub's rodeo
the connecting shaft between the box & transfer case is a hybrid made up out of a kombi axle & cv joint & hiace front tail shaft yoke.
the axle's are hybrids also
Steering arm on front suspension beam had to be relocated to under beam instead of thru the middle to allow room for front diff it seams to be ok so far
I tried to load pics but no luck if someone can help out would be good TA

Sound ummm interesting....
Why didn't you start with a Syncro they are already 4wd. You could run the V8 through a R5 trans and just use the diff in the trans as the transfer. It would be a short package easy to fit in the mid.
Or you could keep it all VW find a early R5 engine and trans and mid mount it. If you went with the VR6 transporter engine it could be layed over so it wasn't so tall. (its on a 15* angle in the transporter)
Or you could fine a 4 motion Transporter and transplant the running gear. Put a diff between the front shafts where the trans useto be and run a jack shaft back to the mid mount.

G'day v.w.dave
Been there done that with a mates syncro I converted it to turboed ej20 subaru nearly ii years ago it's is currently sitting in his shed with the 3rd blown gearbox. Hed has never thrashed it. when he bought it the front drive was not locking in so from day 1 it has been a hole to throw money in. He bought 2 syncros as spare parts originally I was going to buy 1 of his spare body's but prefer the shape of the bay & this a project to show the vw doubters that with some research & investigation into the compatability of an eclectic batch of part's you can build something for a good price So all up a reasonable priced 4x4 for a bit of fun.
