tyres and offset and gears qs

hey guys, i finally got around a to buying a gq on the weekend, a 4.2 diesel 96 rx wagon. im pretty happy with it, mostly standard but has a 2 inch lift. Im not planning a bl or more lift.

I just have a couple of questions regarding wheels and offset etc.

I am thinking of putting 33X10.5s on it, so the first thing i want to clarify is gearing, i know ill need 4.3 diff gears to keep gearing standardish, so will i just need the r and ps from any 3 litre patrol? or the whole centre? did other patrols have 4.3 diff gears?

will i be more likely to find 33X10.5 in 16 or 15" rim? (and which would be cheaper?) Ill likely be getting sunraysias

what width rim for this tyre?

what offset rim would be best, main consideration i suppose is so that the wheels wont scrub on full lock but also dont stick out too far? (whats the standard offset for a gq?)

thanks guys i know its alot of qs but i really appreciate any advice or thoughts : )

it should have 4.1s in the diffs so I would leave them in it. I would only go to 4.3s if swapping to 35s. Just save your coin for a Turbo kit.

yeah i agree with 'turbo gu'. the standard diff gears are fine for 33s. i'm not sure 33x10.5 is a common tyre size (could be wrong). most 33s come as 12.5in wide. as for rim width - if you have a 10.5in tyre 7-7.5in rim prefferable, 8in max. 12.5in tyre 8-10in rims. not sure of offsets you want

Mate, you'll find plenty of A/T's and M/T's in 33x12.5 not 100% about 33x10.5, i think there are only a few tread patterns out there. I would suggest, for a little extra money, 16" rims, they help to clear mud and vent your brakes if your working hard. Plus, 16's look better too.

You should be able to pick up some new sunnies (16x8's) for $100-$110. Don't pay any more than that. 16x8's are perfect for 33's.

As for tyres, call around and get some quotes. It's tight out there atm, so dealers are working hard to bring in the money (but don't be an ass about it).

Cheers,

Streth

those ones in the classifieds would have been good except im in the nt

i think im going to use the rims off my other car, which are 15X7 -20. do you guys think these will do the trick for 33X10.5s?

I know lots of people dont worry about changing gears for 33s but im keen to keep the gearing well matched to the tyres coz i like the way its geared now.

am i right in thinking that any 3 litre patrol had 4.3 diff gears? did any other patrols have them? and will i just need the r and ps?

thanks for the thoughts. Wont be getting a turbo for a while

i don't know if rb30's had 4.3 but i know the rd28's have the factory 4.66s. yes you will only need ring and pinion

I wouldnt bother swapping R&P just for 33's. I did lots of touring on 285/75R16 (33") tyres on 16x8 rims and it was perfect. But if you really want to swap them. I would try and get the whole centre mounted in a 3rd member. Then its a really easy job to swap. Actually I am not sure if the pinion would need to be changed to get the bigger uni's for the drive shafts.

33x10.5R15 are actually pretty good. I ran 255/85R16 (which is pretty much the same size) and I found them pretty good. Where great on the hwy. I did find that there was alot of side wall flex. Which made the steering bit a vague at low tyre pressures under 20PSI.

As for offset of rims. I just ran the same offset as an 80series LC which is 0. I cant remember what the back spacing was. Even with narrow tyres you will need flares. Except if you decided to run the factory Nissan 15x7. They might just sit inside the guards.

Actually just found this from the other thread that I replied.
negative 22 (-22mm) is what the standard Toyota off-set is. And that has worked for me on 285/75R16 and 35x12.50R15. You still get some rubbing on the chassi or around the rear seat belt bolts on the rear. Only way to stop that is to space the bump stops. Which is what I should have done. But never got around to.

hey thanks for the info, sounds like the rims ive got in mind will be good for the job, or will running 15X7 mean too much sidewall flex do you think?

you're right it would be way easier to swap the whole centre and third member, so does anyone know if the whole lot can be swapped and the uni flanges will be the right size? or wont this work?

thanks guys : )

sorry forgot to add: the uni flanges will be the same.........you just need a spare set of diffs to do it all
