A 86 Troopy doent have a 17 digit VIN, it has a chassis number.
It will be on the chassis on the left hand front if my memory serves me rightly.

It will still be stamped on a plate. My 83 60 has two plates, the compliance plate definately has the mth/yr and the VIN / Chassis number.
If it has been stolen and recovered it will just have a Blue Mod plate with a new VIN on it maybe?

Will be *J75 - 000000 where the * will be H or F depending if petrol or diesel, and the 000000 is a number
this is the chassis number, the ID before the 17 digit VIN was introduced.

Yeah I found it no probs, I just wasn't sure which number was the right one, there being a couple of other numbers on the plate, and me not very clued up regarding VIN numbers

The biggest thing with vehicle identifiers, dont trust the plate. I have seen many plates that have typos in them.

The plate should match the NEVDIS system no matter what. There should be NO typos.

That is true Scanas but in a perfect world.........
When the act rego system switched over to Nevdis we had to recall heaps of vehicles. During that time we picked up a lot that didn't have matching IDs between the plate and the vin.

Yeah, we alo have all sorts of issues with mistakes by NEVDIS (eg. plates/chassis match, nevdis stuff up their side). Make sure you read the vin directly off the chassis (right hand side rail, outboard side, just behind the front axle line) as this is the number that matters. Let's say hypothetically that the body on the troopy had been swapped with another identical one, it is the number on the chassis, not on the plates which is considered to be the vehicle's identity.
