hey guys just woundering if a hzj 80 transfer will fit into a fzj80
because mine has shit it self and I don't reali like the whole idea of having electronics to lock them into four wheel drive.

Pretty sure it will fit, the 80 series Toyota genuine manual at work only has one transfer rebuild section, but lists full time and part time variations. The part time transfer section has steps to include the electronic shift or manual shift.

yes, later models had a different center diff lock from memory

If your talking about the factory part time box, then yes it fits BUT tailshafts are different length (just rear from memory)

(at work) Halfway through rebuilding a full time HDJ80 transfer with a part time kit, according to the workshop manual, a part time box would slot in place of a fulltime without a hassle, apart from the shifter, part time has electric diff lock (which becomes 4WD in part time) with stick for low range. Part time has a stick for everything, but has detent, and I'm unsure how that works.

Unless it is the later model fulltime with viscous centre coupling, the viscous coupled transfer appears to be longer than the others. I think this is what crankycruiser id referring to.

All the full time transfers have a longer rear case to accommodate the centre differential. If you change from Fulltime to part-time or visa versa, you'll need to change rear drive shaft to suit.

Yeah hes right, I was wrong, the part time transfer is shorter again than the non viscous full time.

Fitting the part time kit was a piece of piss, well it helped I was rebuilding the box anyway, but even if you dont go the whole hog, its still only a couple housings and the centre diff. Most of it could be done with common hand toold and a tension wrench, only thing the reasonably skilled backyarder might have trouble with would be pressing the bearing off the old centre diff rear half and onto the replacement part.

thanx guys ive already converted my full time transfer from full time to part time but sick of it engaging every now and then.... so i was thinking of ditching it and replacing it with the dx model and having the more reliable way with no electrics.

Is it actually engaging? Or is just the light coming on?
It's common for the switch that turns the light on to go faulty and randomly turn the CDL light on. Just a thought? I've had it happen twice now
