Taking Fan Off 22R and running 10" 12V Fan???

Hey guys,

I have a 10" 12V fan,
Can I hook this up in place
of the mechanical clutch fan off the crank??

When removing this fan, do I just unbolt it
and then install the new 12V fan? or should I
cut all the blades off the fan and bolt the centre bit
back on so that it all bolts in as before?

Also, whats the best way to mount the fan?
I was thinking a couple of pieces of flat alloy bar
and bend em up to suit?
Anything else I should know about this?

toyo truck, take the viscous fan coupleing straight off...un bolt it. and yes u are correct just make a mount that does not restrict airflow to fan and radiator....the other thing with taking the original fan is u will gaina few horses........................just make sure u put in a thermo switch in the radiator and a kill switch for the fan...u might find that u will run ur battery flat.. cheers

Que the cooling problems, standard fan is far more efficient. 10" is ridiculously small aswell.

Why waste your time??
If the fan is working, keep it. If its not working then fix it, but replacing it with an electric fan is wasting time & money and wont work half as good either cooling the truck.

Thanks for all your feedback, this is the sort of thing I wanted to find out.

Basically the reason for the swap is this,
My car runs a 2.5" body lift, and was in an accident, someone hit the front while it was parked,
and it has pushed the radiator back about 1" and now the fan shroud is
rubbing on the fan. I have removed the shroud, but the problem now is that
the fan is rubbing (slightly) on the bottom radiator hose!
It has started to wear into the pipe a little, but no leaks yet.
I am going to replace the old pipe with a new one as the old pipe has a kink in it
(probably from the acco), and the top of the kink is hitting the fan.
This MAY fix the issue, but...

Was thinking of upgrading to 12V ones cause when I did the body lift,
I cut about 2 cms off the end of each fan blade so it would all fit.
But that's how close it is to the bottom hose.

Anyway I was thinking that 12V fans are alot better than the old mechanical fans
because they don't need engine RPM to operate well, so would suit 1000RPM cruising in low.
99% of new cars I have seen have them fitted.
You can switch them off for water-crossings, warmup of engine, etc.
Also the small HP gain will be welcomed!!
Why wouldn't I do the upgrade?? What's so good about the old mechanical fan??
If I do go with the 12V setup, what size fans are reccomended and how many??

hey toyo truck, i think this is one of those debates u have to decide......but if u can fit twin tens to a braken ur a winner but makes sure of the cunsomption rate from battery is ok........thermo gauge switchs for fan are about 50 to 70 bucks and then some for the fan

my opinion, go the electric fans. i run a 16 inch on mine no worries. as does my brother and a mate. look for ford EF (i think) twin thermos they are supposedly the best.

you'll free up a few ponies, and it will drive quieter.

get a davies, craig. thermo switch as the repco ones are useless.

AU falcon thermos r cheaper, but will b hard to fit to a lux rad.
I would bolt the old shroud back on and drop the whole radiator down an inch, cheapest and easiest...........

Yes alot of new cars tend to have electric fans. This is probably mainly because cooling systems have become more efficient. i.e. better radiators, alloy heads, water pumps etc. I run a 16" thermo on my car, becasue I had no room to fit an engine driven one. Engine driven fans are still more effective.
