Hi all. Can anyone help me with options for converting a 2.8 diesel hilux 4WD to auto? Will a auto out of a 2.4T surf bolt up and if so aren't these electronically controlled? I reckon it'd be a sure bet someone has done something along these lines before. Cheers

The Surf auto should bolt up yes. BUT it is electronically controlled. Computer is in the drivers side kick panel. I've built my own auto-controller in the past for a surf, and from memory the old auto wiring with right across the dash and through the firewall on the passenger side. Computer will be easy to get, but extracting the wiring might not be worth it

i think all the ecu needs is temp sensor and tps sensor. both will fit the 2.8. wiring might be fun.

i thought the very early models was no ecu controlled?
the other thing is to look at other makes. a lot of jap vehicles used the same transmission. seg mitsi auto will bolt up etc.

Does the computer only control shifting? What if I were to have the auto manualised?

efi models its a single fuel and gearbox ecu. i think the earlier ones had a emission ecu and a separate gearbox ecu.
don't know about manualising but i see a few write ups that are done on surfs.

Thanks for the help guys. So I'm on to a surf auto plus all the associated bits and pieces, however the transfer is missing an electrical box (?) that controls the transfer case shifting. Will my standard chain drive transfer bolt to the surf auto? Or can I adapt a manual lever shift to the surf transfer case? Thanks again
