Hi Guys
Am looking for some help for a mate who has just bought a 1982 cherokee sportman. Here goes
1 it has a T5 manual gearbox what oil should we fill it with? Grade type?
2 It has a NP208 Transfer case What oil should we use? Grade Type?
3 it has a danna 44 front diff and a AMC 20 rear lsd do we just use a lsd oil for both diffs and what grade a 90w?
4What type of engine coolant is best for these old amc motors?
5 Also any reccomendations for engine oil weight type etc?
6 Does anyone know if they use unleaded petrol or are they lead replacement?
The gearbox and engine seem to be in good order the diffs look a bit sludgy any ideas how to get the sludge out?
Thanks in advance
Bull

G'day bulldog....here's my 2¢:
1 it has a T5 manual gearbox what oil should we fill it with? Grade type? 90W....IMHO go a good brand but I'd probably stick with a mineral not synthetic.
2 It has a NP208 Transfer case What oil should we use? Grade Type? NOT oil. You want ATF. Probably Dexron II.
3 it has a danna 44 front diff and a AMC 20 rear lsd do we just use a lsd oil for both diffs and what grade a 90w? 90W is right, but I'm not too familiar with the AMC20 but if it's a clutch style LSD it will require a friction modifier.
4What type of engine coolant is best for these old amc motors? IMHO Green.
5 Also any reccomendations for engine oil weight type etc? 30w?
6 Does anyone know if they use unleaded petrol or are they lead replacement? LRP.
7 The diffs look a bit sludgy any ideas how to get the sludge out? Open the hat drain & wipe out with a rag, or dig out with a BFS
Also might be worth pulling the axle shafts out , giving that a clean and shecking all the seals 7 bearings....

Thanks mate.
Why would you use ATF fluid in the transfer?
I thought that a auto may have shared the ATF fluid like my toyota but the manual would have had normal oil in the transfer case.
Will use what you recomend tho.
IS tectaloy pre 90 coolant okay to use for the Donk?
Ripped the covers off the diffs and removed axles gave em good clean the rear had a lsd so we put castrol lsx90 in front and rear.
Thanks again

The T5 is a known weak spot in Jeeps and is critical on the oil used
the wrong oil can give poor shifting and premature failure I can not remember the specs of the top of my head but ring Mascott motors in Norwa
Get some oil of them you will pay an arm and a leg for it but then you have the right specs for the next time around. They use a penrite oil and it is not quite standard manual gearbox oil
Warn your mate to treat the gearbox nice or he will be up for a replacement They will work fine but just wont cope with abuse

Just ran through the Castrol lube check and the recommendations are
T5, ...Syntrax 75/90, which is a GL5 full synthetic synchro box lube
208 t/case, ... ATF Dexron III, just as everyone has recommended.
Model 20 rear w/LSD, ... Castrol recommend LSX 90 for '83, but do have a side note recommending SAF-XA for heavy duty use, but they are missing '80, '81 and '82 model years. Personally, I'd use the SAF-XA. this is a race spec 75w-140 LSD fluid. We use it in our Patrol and Landy. It's worth the money.
Engine, ... 20w-50 or even better, an HDEO 15w-40, eg; Castrol RX Super, Caltex Delo 400, Mobil Delvac MX, Fuchs Titan Ultralube, Pennzoil Long Life, etc. Good viscocity range and a much more robust additive package than any petrol engine oil, which is particularly important for an engine of that age which could have a bit of sludge and crap internally. An HDEO will clean it out and keep it clean.
Fuel, ... All AMC engines had induction hardened valve seats from '74 on, as that was when unleaded was introduced in the US. I think the use of either type would be OK. Having said that, I always used leaded (super) in my old 258. Maybe use some valve saver occaisonally just to be on the safe side.
