80 series fuel sender upgrade

Hey guys,

With my current auxillary tank in the petrol 80 series it will only fill the main tank once it's under 3 1/4 full, and i can't choose to simply suck fuel from the front tank or rear tank.
When i purchase a long range tank in the very near future i'd like to be able to chose which tank the car runs off, that way if a tank is punctured and springs a leak then i will still be able to use the other tank as per usual.

Is there a way i can change out the fuel sender from a newer model 80 or 100 series? And would it be a simple task?

Cheers

by the sounds of that you need to put a solenoid between the injector pump and the main tank..
as in
at the minute im thinking it all runs from the main tank..
one line of feed, not two..
where you can choose feed from the main or auxilary tank.

youll need to install another line.. which would mean tapping into the auxillary line, with a Y peice, then youd have air problems, sucking air from the main tank..
idealy you would install another line into the rear tank, or another solenoid at the rear.. stopping the pump sucking air from the main tank..
i ran mine just like your setup..
weld a 10mm elbow into the main filler, and wallah.. fuel goes into the main tank from long range tank..

you could have pressure problems going that way, getting fuel from rear tank, otherwise why else they do it that way ? cheapest way...maybe  ting......ha ha
1hdt ive heard of guys throwing a electric pump before the injector pump.. thats another story..

in the end i cant see it being a problem, couple hundred bucks and a days work for a situation that might never ever...happen..
kind of a waste.. good old murphy is learking..

i know on the patrols .. :bad-words: damn it..
they have a dash switch, but cant remember if it feeds the main tank..
i know on the landcruisers it feeds off the rear tank.. doesnt feed into the main tank.

its a mod that requires some thought, and a few hours.. and some money for a situation that might never occur..

kneadit or normal soap is a good toolbox additive.. easier option

I don't know if this is what you are after but if it is this is how i would do what MAD is trying to describe.

My setup is similar but my setup uses no electric pumps so my 6 port solenoid is just one wire and i add 12v to the terminal to switch between my Aux and main tanks. Two hoses (one feed and one return) from the main tank same from the Aux tank and then they switch to feed the diesel pump and the return line is also switched.

how cheap is that thing
70bucks or pounds or whatever cruntsee the poms use

youve got more chance of snagging a fuel line with the extra hoses required to do that setup..

but that would solve a leaking fuel tank for sure.
which is the potential problem your trying to solve

i wonder how it would go if you had a blockage..
or ran out of fuel and had to bleed the system..

be a beartch..?

other thing is youd have to run all that stuff through the water trap first.. then the injector pump..

soo the solenoid would IDEALY be connected directly to the water trap, THEN the injector pump

fuel tanks.... 4 fuel lines (2breathers or return lines) then the solenoid.. then the water trap.. then injector pump.. ?

the trouble with that diagram is its does have fuel filters..
but its going to bypass the water trap.

soo realy youll have 3 fuel filters..
and totaly miss the water trap.

i run a cheap throw away petrol see through 5dollar joobie on my auxillary tank.. before the transfer pump..
and
run the normal filter and water trap on the engine and chassis
2 filters and the water trap.

That diagram is from their site, not my drawing and like i said mine is a different solenoid, but same 6 port design. All my lines are above the tanks and plastic P clips hold them to the body. The lines going to the motor are still the hard lines from factory that doesn't change the filtering setup. I have seen the 6 port solenoids for less than $50 (USD) just this one can control pumps and such. I use a factory 100 series sub tank switch which clips into the factory holes on my ln65 hilux. I wired mine through a relay because like i said i just have to add 12v to a single terminal to get the change over.

For the price of a electric fuel pump you could just have that as a transfer setup from your sub to your main but in view this is the better way.

Also i have run my tanks dry before and ran out of fuel, just have to flick the switch quickly and then get the revs up. Never failed me.... Yet.
When i fill up because i have both fillers in the one cap i just always add a few dollars to the Aux tank to ensure it is there if i run dry on the main to get me home or to the station. I also alternate which tank i fill to the brim every couple of fills to keep the insides protected from rust ect.
