From a quick read on google it says that the shifter is controlled by a solenoid internally (which is run from vacume) if this is the case it would almost definitely have to be independent from the rest of the inside of the case. If anyone else with a bit more knowledge can help more probably listen to them hahahahah.

It's a chain driven transfer case operated via a 12V solenoid. The front differential has a collar that locks the passenger axle in and out when you press the button on the side of the stubby lever which is shifted via a vacuum pump located in the engine bay which is where you're probably getting confused.

I've had a few of these and never bothered extending the breathers on gearbox/transfer as if your vehicle is submerged enough to draw water into the gearbox/transfer where they are currently located then oil contamination would be the least of your worries IMO.

That said if you like drowning your truck then there's no dramas extending them further.
