I would be more concerned as to why an engine was being rebuilt at 150,000km, then thinking an even greater concern as to why a TD42 is being rebuilt at 150,000km

30k is not too much for all that if it is in good condition. Get underneath and have a look at the chassis rails, diffs and crossmember to see if its been bashed around. Look inside for signs of wear and tear etc. Above all else. Make sure its engineered. Good luck getting a road worthy with 35's and a lift. But I'd be talking him down to at least 28k. Is it turbo? Not all GU's were turbo. Also is it a DX or ST? A stock non turbo DX would not be worth that much and as rOck_mOnkey said. Ask why the engine was rebuilt. Could have easily done 20k since the last floods.

he said the compression of 4and6 was slightly below nissan spec's so he rebult it along with diffs & gearbox

OK. So he spent 6k+ because compression was slightly below nissan specs on a TD42 that had only done 150000k. That just doesn't sound right. There is more to that story as to why the compression was low.
You didn't answer the other questions as well. Turbo? ST or DX? Both these questions will add or subtract value. An N/A TD42 DX is only worth around 20-22ish.

Disregard all the questions. Unless it is really decked out with a lot of camping stuff like drawers, roof rack, spotties, winch etc etc etc. Then it is too much to pay. A quick search of carsales shows that. You can get a 98 TD42 wagon with a long range tank for only $14,500. Spend an extra 10k on turbo, lockers, suspension and tyres and you'll have the same truck you're looking at and still have change. Spend the full 30k and you'll have a very nicely set up wagon to your own specifications.
I'd be very wary of why that engine was rebuilt along with the diffs. It sounds way to coincidental that he rebuilt all of them. More probably water damage.

Im Pretty sure there were no factory turbo GU's in 98? Could be wrong though.
I havent looked at carsales but I bought an 01 ST ute over 5 years ago for 32k with all the fruit and less km.
I cant imagine paying more than low 20 for a good one. Its a shame based on what it would cost to build one, but thats all they would be worth.

in a word yes. however since nissan stopped building them people have been asking 'inflated' prices for td42 variants - just look at y60 models. i probably paid to much for the last y60 diesel i bought but that was the going price a the time. the others have asked some interesteing questions, but you have to remember the car is 15yrs old.

I paid $28k for my 2000 model and I've spent another $2-3k on it sorting a few issues out
But mine's got a LOT of fruit
