Ok guys I will start this thread now as we have just ordered a bunch of parts. This is in a good mate at works patrol.
We are doing a Toyota 1UZ-FE Alloy Quad Cam V8 swap again this time into a automatic not manual patrol. The patrol is currently 4.2 petrol.
After a lot of research we are about to start.
Crown half cut has arrived should be lifting nissan engine out in 2 weeks.

why not?
he was going to do the whole TD42 with turbo conversion it would have cost him about $8000 minimum, he will now have twice the power, half the weight for around $6500 - $7000 inc the engine.

the adaption is quite simple, you just need to sit down and think it through, we are using all off the "shelf" components from 2 manufacturers which you will see when we get started, besides engine mounts there will be 2 custom parts to acutally get the engine mated to the factory auto and sitting in the rails. This will all come to light in the next few weeks
the manual conversion i helped on before

u still didnt mention why u chose the toyota alloy v8 over the nissan alloy v8 ???
very similiar spec motors
both alloy
both about the same output power wise
both 6 bolt bottom end....strong
etc etc
so ???

i have experience with the 1UZ into patrol conversion
also putting a 1UZ in my hilux
1UZ half cut is cheeper
and from what I have read the 1UZ is easier to swap than the VH45

I think that is still being worked out. Currently have the front cut purchased. I know they are using the toyota computer to start with and going to try and adapt the Nissan 5-speed to the motor. Work should be starting next week some time. I'll know more then. I had a couple of concers about it . . . did you use a surge tank or modify the sump at all? Just thought that fuel or oil starvation on a funky angle wouldn't be good.

you will need a surge tank
pm me, i will have rear sump conversion kits available which you will need as the front and mid sump varients will not clear the front diff

his patrol is auto, and he likes his auto
the auto will be fine as he just ordered from
Wholesale Automatics:
Extreme Valve Body
Low stall torque converter
Manual Lockup kit
Temperature guage kit
Auxillary transmission fluid cooler
Way cheeper than a T700r4 swap and probably a little stronger

Hi guys,
I am getting a 1UZ-FE fitted into my GQ shorty next week...
While I would have like a Nissan V8 these are the reasons I chose the Toyota:
1) Cheap, Nissan is big $$ if you can find one...
2) Cheaper than Holden/Ford with EFI
3) Parts, available in Australia (doing Cape York next year)
4) Modern, I want a reliable tourer
5) Impressed with the quality/workmanship/engineering
6) Many potential upgrades....although not as much as Holden/Ford
7) Like to be different...
I could not justify the $10000+ I was repeatadly quoted for a Holden/Chev/Ford conversion, with no breakdown of the costs...
I am not after big power but would like some more, better fuel economy and longer life for the GQ...

are you doing the conversion or is someone else doing it?
how are you going to go about mating the engine to your manual gearbox.

Someone else is doing it, and they are making an adapter plate. First time they have done a Patrol but have done Hilux's before.
Expecting some difficulties but they are enthusiastic.
They say they have a suitable sump but if you think we will need a custom sump then I will let them know. If I need a custom sump can you advise on how to get one?
Also I want the snorkel hooked up so there will be some plumbing to do...
I am running the factory ECU at first.

can i ask how much it is costing?
there is a rear factory sump but is mega rare, i can't even think of what it came in atm

Cant quote costs yet.
Happy to let you know later, with a full breakdown.
Are you saying a rear sump is not available?
Also, can you help me with the tacho? I am assuming the 6-cyl tacho may not work with the V8?
thanks...

the tacho on your dash will work fine, it will just need to be recalibrated, where are you?
Posted: Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:28 pm
by getdirty
You will have another problem with the tacho, the tb or td tacho's dont rev high enough. What I did with mine was get a 3ltr GQ tacho face (8k redline) and use the infinity tacho guts to work it so it would work with the rev signal from the computer. That was with a VH45 though, Toy motor may work different.
Posted: Fri Jul 30, 2004 4:46 pm
by bubs
cool thanks for the tip, in the manual conversion the rev limiter is set to 5500rpm so it is fine it was a TD42 before the conversion
Posted: Fri Jul 30, 2004 5:21 pm
by getdirty
Is that all it revs to? Interesting. The VH45 would happily sit on its soft limiter of 7,500 for as long as i wanted. The sound of an 8 reving like that was awesome!
Posted: Fri Jul 30, 2004 5:39 pm
by bubs
that is what it is set to, aftermarket engine managment, the 1UZ will sit up at 8500rpm all day no worries
the sound of a 1UZ at 8000rpm was awesome to, V8's rock

I heard the rev limit is 6800-7000, which is fine as the standard 1uz-fe drops off over 6200.
My tacho goes to 6000 so I will see if I can use it until I look at power mods.
The computer has a 180kph limiter but I have 33" MTR's so forget that!
As for a surge tank, I am getting a Long Ranger 147l tank which has an internal mini-tank where the pickup is - do you think this would be good enough?
BTW, I am waiting for info on a guy who has a piggy-back circuit for the Toyota ECU - enabling it to be tuned. Should be interesting.

BUBS! Have you or anybody else got a power curve for both the Toyota 1UZ-FE Alloy Quad Cam V8 and the Nissan 4.2 Litre Petrol. I'm doing the Low Stall as part of the kit for this project and want to get it spot on. Where normally very close but the power curve will tell me at what Rpm the power really starts to come on stronge compared to the Nissan Engine.

Rodney

Rodney, i will try and track down dyno sheet from when we did the conversion on the manual GQ patrol.
I dont have anything on the 4.2 petrol if someone else has that it would be great.
