I was hoping you guys could help me out. I have a GU patrol with a 6.5L Chevy diesel in it, It currently runs a patrol manual gear box but I would like to change to an auto. My question is what auto gear box is best and what would I need to do to fit it. Thanks

Well there is a couple of options. Since you already have it mated to a Patrol gearbox. I would imagine it would be pretty easy to make it fit to a Patrol 4spd auto. The 4 spd auto out of a GU is better. As they have a bigger torque converter. But basically the same box.
The other option would be to go some form of GM auto (th350 or th400). They should bolt up to the 6.5lt. Then just need an adaptor to the patrol transfercase.

Hi mate, what you needs is a 4l80, was standard fitment behind the 6.5td, they are basically a th400 with an overdrive. Very strong box standard. You can either run them full manual or get a standalone comp to drive it. They are big boxes, marks do a transfer kit to the transfer.
I've just put a ls1 and 4l80 in my dual cab, love the auto. Do a lil research as far as length goes. My transfer ended up being 56mm further back, so tailshafts had to be modded. The t700 is shorter than the 4l80, just not as strong standard, you would want it freshened and strengthened slightly before fitment.
I have a t700 with conv sitting in my shed that came off a 6.5 in a 4wd chev truck, would need a freshen and is not an electric box so hook up kick down and away you go, no computer to worry about. Would be ideal for you just that I'm in wa!
Cheers

The 4 speed auto works well. You just need a better than standard torque converter.

After having put a TH400 in my SWB Mav, I wished I'd gone for a $2000 carbon twin plate clutch, and a gearbox re-co....
Woulda been heaps cheaper.....
Transfer case is sitting about 125mm further back, which is on the limit for tailshaft shortening in a SWB.....
Having said that, the full manual box, and 3g stall is just about perfect for my vehicle. Should pull a high 12/low 13 1/4 mile....
Just have to sort out some niggling problems......
Cheers
