HDj100 high pressure noise

Good Evening,
We brought landcruiser 100 series with a HD-FTE engine fitted to it doesn't seem to go as good as the old 80 series with a 1HD-t motor in it anyhow it has developed a noise at about 2000 rpm's that sounds very much like boost pressure bypassing gasket or leaking out of rubber hose U can increase or decrease volume of it by increasing or decreasing throttle position & it becomes more apparent when it reaches operating temperature, when driving the vehicle it appears to be coming from about the centre of the engine bay is there a commen problem with these engines like a faulty gasket or leaking shaft seal.
Thanks Mrfras

The hose from intercooler up to the intake has popped off mine once, it has no power when it did!
Remove and check the condition of the two intercooler hoses. Sounds like one is split or something.
then fit a boost guage and you will know for cetain. Should hit about 15psi at max boost.

Thanks

These motors also have a common issue with the intake manifold coming loose so check all the nuts on the manifold, the ones closest to the firewall are a major pain in the arse to get to but if you swear and yell enough you will get to them.
They also have the EGR system to comply with emissions. I have completely removed the EGR system from my motor and had to clean out all the intake manifold and intake piping which had a 10mm thick layer of black tar from the exhaust soot mixing with a bit of oily blow-by.
In the centre of the intake crossover pipe is the EGR valve. YOu can order a replacement alloy section from toyota to replace this for about $80 as there are versions of this motor with no EGR in other countries. Then I just made up a blanking plate out of 5mm steel for the exhaust manifold where the EGR pipe connects and it all looks stock standard and you never have any EGR again :}
The simple way to disable the egr is to block off the little vacum hose with an appropriately sized ball bearing inserted into the hose that connects to the EGR valve which will stop it ever opening. These motors will have no problem with the EGR completely removed or blocked off, unlike the newer v8 motors which will throw errors if the EGR is blocked or removed.
I have added a boost guage and pyro guage which gives you a really good idea of whats going on with the engine and would let you diagnose this problem alot easier i think.

Hi Shadow,
Yea I had read somewhere that the EGR valves give some problems I won't be able to work on it until tomorrow night or Wednesday so I will check these items out as U say loose manifold bolt maybe the problem as it doesn't start until the engine is at operating temperature & above 2000 rpms, will have to check out my old 60 series for the turbo boost gauge & make sure the nylon pressure hose is not rotten if all's ok will fit it up very surprised that it runs 15psi boost
Thanks

Hi Shadow,
Thanks for the info it got the better of me so when got out of bed this afternoon I went investigating & yes found rather loose bolts on inlet manifold right at back not very good to get at but did get it done will test tomorrow when we go to town as it's 60ks should be a good test.
Thanks
Fras
