At least with the profenders I am close to superior for purchase and after sales service.

This issue has been brought up on pirate a few times not with pro-fender coil overs but almost every other brand of coil over, coil touching the shock is almost always a coil problem (normally cheaper coils) not the shock it self.Ben-e-boy wrote:I have asked this question on another forum. For example guys running a 2.5" coil over on a 7200 / trophy truck run in to this issue.
If you run a 3" shock on the same set up - the lower spring can be longer without bowing.
The lower spring should be length appropriate, and there to maintain the ride height of the vehicle only. The upper spring should be a lower rate, bottomed out on the stop at ride height, to keep the coils happy when the wheels droop.
Guys using too smaller shock need to run the lower and upper in the same (or too similar) rate (to stop the coils bowing) and end up effectively halving the spring rate - as the car is supported on the lower and upper springs. This is where tuning is difficult as you are only running one spring rate on a dual rate system.
Edit:
I should clarify, that 2.5" and 3" springs start to bow at different lengths - hence the above problem.
A long travel set up requires spring lengths outside of what work in a 2.5" coil.
To reduce bowing, and improve tune-ability if too smaller shock is used, you can run a second slider and three springs per shock. That way the bottom two can run as one spring, support the ride height and not bow due to the slider being there to stabilise things - remembering that the combined coil rates of the two lower springs will halve.

Profenders aren't marketed as a shock that can compete with the top of the line Fox or Kings but are marketed and sold as a cheaper alternative to these more expensive brands. It just comes down to what you want from them.

Coming from some one that drives and thinks the world of a Leaf Sprung Patrol... Everything I have seen and watched over the last 2 years the Profenders are a fairly good option for the price you pay. Plenty of really good rigs out there are running them without a problem. And the plus side of you being close to Mick at superior is a big help.

Ah, it's good to be back on outer limits, nothing's changed.
In my limited experience the shocks are good but the coils are not. By the time you buy quality springs, perhaps the price isn't that far off a fox coil over with springs on it already.

Basically I can get my long arms done, a PAC swaybar done and shock towers done. I plan to drop it to 2 inch lift (from 4) and 33's on road 37's offroad. As I am pushing shite uphill to find a coil spring that will lift 2 in and handle 14 inch travel in the rear and still remain captive I am thinking the coilover is the next step.
Yes being close to superior is a big advantage, and considering I am not working FIFO any more LAYBY is a winner too.

If I did that to an off the shelf coil would it be possible to stretch it beyond its capabilities? A nother option that I have often done is put a over sized but under weight spring in. So for 2" lift put a really soft 3" in. With a longer shock you will get your desired more down travel. But this only works if your car is a little heavy to start with.

i run fox coilovers on my ultra 4 class 8 machine. i have had no problems with them in the time i have been running them, 2.5 years. i also do all my own tuning work. i have not seen inside a profender coilover, but if you don't set them up right in the beginning they well ride bad and give you lots of grief no matter what brand you buy. if you need a hand with tuning and setup send me a message. there seems to be a few posts that are pointing you in the wrong direction, spring wise.

As for fox you can get them from Buds Customs, Hubter Rivamaster and a few others.

Not coilovers but I'm running profender 2.5" bypass shocks and bump stops. It handles quite nice. I previously had fox 2.0 smoothies and it handles way better in race conditions. Rides quite stable through the whoops with the standard valving although the front is a little soft and rear is a bit hard but we are getting it tuned by superior once the rest of the car is finished. They are fully tuneable like any king or fox. You can get the shims from superior. They worked a lot better straight out of the box without tuning than we expected so hopefully after tuning they will be even better. There is also a fair few guys running them in the states in ultra 4 that are happy with them
