Oil leak - sump or Rear main

So my GU TD42T is leaving quite the puddle and I thought it would be the rear main, but before forking out big dollars I have scrubbed it clean... several times trying to confirm where its coming from. Not super easy to tell to be honest.

But I did notice a little oil on the sump bolts and checked them and they were definitely all quite loose - as in I'm surprised some haven't vibrated out. I am hopeful this is the source of my leak.

One difficulty I have is the weird foam pad - read oil drenched thing after every oil change between sump and bell housing. What is the purpose of this? is it a filter for the bell housing breather or something?

Can they be purchased new? mine is horrid. And does anyone know if they can be removed - if so how? I would like to get it out and re clean for a better view of where oil is coming from, at the moment it is confusing where the oil is coming from. And its in the way of several sump bolts.

Thanks guys
Hanko

It was the sump being loose BTW.

Mavrik, do you mean simply grip it and rip it? or is there a proper way of removing it. Admittedly i was covered in oil and in a bad mood last time i looked at trying to remove it but couldn't even begin to see how it was attached.
