Outer Limits 4x4 Board

So The hilux I purchased has a stuffed engine 2.4L 22r. I was aware of it and paid accordingly.

Young bloke I bought it off couldn't get it going at all. My sparky removed the alarm, fixed timimg ( was 180' out ) and put plug leads on right plugs.

Started and idled a bit rough but ok.

Decided it might be worth seeing how bad the engine was, so refitted radiator and filled with water and started, left radiator cap off so not to pressurizes it.

Within 1.5 to 2 minutes it was running rough and steam started coming out around exhaust manifold.

Withing 3 minutes I could hardly get it to idle, after that stalled and didn't want to start.

Planning on buying a replacement engine as it seems VERY terminal, so its not that big an issue but I would love to know how it could empty the radiator so quickly.

Hope fully someone may have an idea on a similar engine.

You say that it emptied the radiator into the oil? If so, it is a head gasket. If it all going out into the exhaust, it is a gasket or a cracked head? Either way, it is a head off to find out what is wrong. It may only be a gasket in which case it is a fairly cheap repair. You could try a compression test. If you have 3 "good" readings and one bad reading, then it could be a gasket or head crack. If you have 2 low readings next to each other, it is a gasket.

Conversion time, all the R motors are horrible fuel sucking, gutless POS.

3ltr V6 petrol yota and box should do the trick.

22R suck fuel like it's designed to do nothing else.
I had one with 5k worth of rebuild receipts and it used substantially more fuel than the LT1 Corvette 350 I replaced it with.
Boat anchor it!

I am trying to salvage the 22r, by fixing or replacing as needed, as I simply don't have the cash to do a conversion on it at the moment.

The less spent fixing it to get 6 to 12 month out of it, the more money that gets set aside for conversion time.

Your better off getting a cooling system pressure tester and a tk tester

Whats the Tk Tester Charles ?

Just googled it, yeah cool.

What will it tell me that the cooling pressure test and compression test wont mate ?

Don't waste your time and money with compression/pressure testing. Pull the head and check for damage. With severe overheating the 22r block can warp between cylinders that can't be machined. It's better to know that before you spend money on it

compression tester will on test the cylinder pressure but if you head is cracked in the intake or exhaust port it wont show anything.
Pressure test the cooling system with the spark plugs out and if the pressure drops quickly crank over the motor and if any water is leaking into the bores it will push out the plug holes

Yeah Aussie 4runner had a 3lt V6 (3vz)

Take the advice above bud and don't bother with the 22r. Put it on hold, save some money and go a V6 or something else.

Look up the 22re gas/propane kit from the states if you get it going.

I had a 22r in the 4runner that I had years ago. Nothing but dramas.

I owned it for about 9months, had the head go, took it to a local mechanic(I was living at North Richmond at the time), the mechanic said its a very common problem with these engines, so common that a Windsor based workshop made their own heads for these(no idea what the shop was though).

If I was you, and youre pulling the head off, go right down to the bottom end. The timing chain started to eat away at the guides that it runs in.
I turfed that motor and went with a recoed 22r.
10 months later, head went on that one too, a week out of warranty, but they covered it anyway.

It all got fixed and I swapped the car for my Lux.


These engines are as well known for issues as the Surf 2.4td engines.

I had a 22r in 95 hilux that ran flawless for years, only issue was dizzy would take in water and stop it, that it. read many times bottom end is strong and can handle a turbo, gotpropain in US has a turbo 22r running well
