1KD Carbon Deposits in Intake

Just a bit of a heads up. My 08 Hilux has been running like a bag of shit lately, between gear changes it feels like it had really severe turbo lag, and getting off the mark too was a bit average. Thinking about it too, when I towed the camper about 6 months ago it was pretty average too.
So I pulled my Intake side off and this is the shit I found :
It's all through the intake manifold too.
So I believe it affects all 1KD's with EGR.

Do you check oil pickup screen every oil change?
The d4d motors have a major problem with the injector seals starting to fail causing carbon in the oil and blocking the pickup
Look out for smoke on cold startup and rattle when cold, there will be no loss of power, no extra fuel consumption but if left you will kill the motor
toyota revised the injector seals about 08 and injectors seem to last slightly longer but are a mjor prob.
You need to put a good quality oil catch can like a provent to remove blow by which helps with stopping egr and intake blocking like your pic.
Also fit a pre fuel filter water separator, if water gets past factory filter it will kill any common rail motor. Dont be fooled by the fact toyota have a inbuilt water separator with a sensor to tell when water is in the system, by the time the light comes on the dash its too late and engine damage may already have occurred.

Hi rilux,
I have a landcruiser with a hdfte engine fitted I blew a inlet gasket & when pulled the inlet manifold off it was coked up with carbon junk like yours so I cleaned it out then refitted while in the process I blanked off the pipe from exhaust manifold to the EGR valve it appears to go much better now, But I'm lead to believe EGR valve only works on idle or very low rev's, The thing is it's supposed to improve exhaust gases before it gets to the catalytic converter the trouble is with this setup hot air when it reaches the inlet manifold it cools & deposits inside manifold & restricts air which in turn riches the fuel mixture & when EGR valve is open it just deposits in manifold
Thanks

The rails also have a tendency to clog up. My old man has honed quite a few out, not a commonly known thing.
