97. is that GQ or GU??
if its GQ - 2.8 - I wouldnt bother.. go a 4.2 and turbo it.
If its GU 3 litre - i wouldnt bother - go a 4.2 turbo
If its a GU 4.2 turbodiesel.. excellent!!!!

I had a GQ 97 RX 2.8TD it was a great truck ran it with 33's no probs. never missed a beat. I'm still kicking myself for selling it.
The best why to decide is drive one.
I test drove a GQ 4.2D it was yawn S L O W. I bought the GQ2.8TD.
A few years down the track, I test drove a GU 4.2TD. I then test drove the 3.0ltr TDi and bought one, 3.0ltr blows the doors off stock GU6TDi and mines an auto with 35's ....yes auto 'cause I'm a lazy ass.
People will say once you spend $$$$ on the 4.2TDi and it'll go better, spend the same $$$$ on the 3.0TDi and so will it.
Moral of the story is don't listen to anyone, make up your own mind by test driving a few.
Cheers,
Andrew.

GU 2.8 in theory was good, in reallity that's another story 300kg heavier than the GQ I must admit I have never driven a GU 2.8 but I reckon it'd be on par with a GU 4.2 D.

GU has the electronic fuel injector pump. - can be done up by motsons to get a bit more torque/power out of it.
I went 4.2 because i want to run 36's.
Bogged.. - my mistake.. too much
