Rear Axle Seals

While replacing my rear axle seals yesterday i noticed that one side had some kind of retainer and the other side didnt. The side without the retainer was leaking worse than the other side. Its like a black plastic ring with a scooped out centre that fits over the spacer with which the seal seals. Its got about 10 holes in it. Anyone know what this does?? My thoughts were along the line of an oil retainer to keep oil around the wheel bearings.

the only time Zook rear bearings get "oiled" , is when the seal does leak !!
the plastic "thingy" , is more for stopping oil surge at the seals .
i.e... when cornering & side angles etc.... !!!
they are not that important , but they are there for a reason !!!

they are called a seal protector, and they locate the axle when you are installing it as not to damage the seal.
