Feroza airbox

Hey guys
I'm looking to install a snorkel for my Feroza. The original plan i had was to remove the stock airbox leaving the chamber on top of the rocker cover and replace it with a Hilux air box. This would provide easier to find spares in Australia, make mounting a snorkel easier due to hilux's drawing air from in the guard and hopefully make things a little less restrictive.
I'm wondering how this will affect the performance of my car as I've heard all sorts of different results, some people say as long as you keep the chamber on top of the rocker cover it will be fine while others say the stock air box is crucial to maintaining power and torque lower in the rev range.
