My 2.8ITD's done 195K, any advice on "when" I shold have had the turbo serviced. Are there any tell tale signs of the turbo needing a service ?

On this same topic, does anyone have a suggestion on where to find rebuild info for them. (i've only got the useless Haynes manual)
Mine is starting to get the telltale oil inside the intercooler. And I haven't pulled a turbo down before. (might even get a specialist to do it?)
Advice or suggestions?
Rob.

I have pulled a couple of turbos down before. I have never seen any tech manuals to do it though. At the time of one when I was helping my neighbour pull down one he rang all the turbo places asking what the acceptable tolerance measures were. None of them would tell him they just told him to bring it in and they would check it. So either it is
(a) a closely guarded secret, or,
(b) the turbo places don't know and just put a bearing/seal kit in each turbo that comes in.
Personally I would leave the turbo alone until you notice it is on the way out (leaking oil) etc, then pull it out and dismantle, it is pretty easy to do yourself - the hard part is finding a turbo place that will sell you just the bits you need when they aren't doing the work themselves.

Yeah about 200K's is generally excepted as being the service life of one of these. Your always gonna get a little oil through to the intercooler but when it becomes excessive and needing to top up the oil all the time then it's time for a reco.
Remember the impeller has to be balanced and that is beyond the scope of the home mechanic if you want to get proper life out of the thing.
I'd be taking it off myself and taking it to a turbo specialist for a reco or even a changeover when the oil consumption gets excessive.
