the great grandfather of all Patrols

1950's 4w60's Patrols. As far as I know this is the very first 4x4 made by Nissan. They came out in 1951 for sale to the public. Used mostly by police, fire and military in the early days. First Patrols exported from japan went to Argentina in S.America.
From what I understand there is a few in Australia sold there in the late 1950's. I know fo at least 2 in Aus still alive today...
Here is a bunch of pictures....

They had a 4spd tranny that is massive and has no synchro's. The transfer is small. The rear diff is a center pumpkin. I persoannly viewed and inspected a 4W60 in S.America or what was left of one...it is nearly 100% DEAD!
This nice example is in a museum in Japan.

this motor was just about the largest put into a vehicle of this kind during this era. It was an inline 6 that was pretty large. This motor was redefined over the years all the way up to the P40 found in MQ's during the 1980's.

mid 1950's wagon. I believe model is the 4W66 and this may be the rarest Patrol on the face of the planet today!

You would think somewhere between 1950 and 1980 they would have broken some of those short u bolts and realised it was a problem and changed the design.

I am sure u-bolts were broken, Nissan as we know is often slow to change their designs.
It for sure may not appeal to many people but it is the very first Patrol. Without this truck you would not have G60's, MQ's, MK's, GQ's, GU's or any of it! This is what started it all...and I hate to admit it but the truck was modeled after the old Willies. Which should be no suprise because everything inspired to be a Willies or better back in the day.
There is one thing we could all agree on about this model of Patrol....it is very old school!

Bogged...I would hate to argue with you about the model and so on. But...
The model was first the 4W60, then later in the 50's it became the 4W65. I looked at the link and see nothing on the model being an F60. Matter of fact there is next to zero info there on this early patrol. the pics of the green one on the link are of an Aussie late 50's 4W65. There was a F4W60 that is simply a fire specific Patrol. I have a number of orginal brochures from Nissan featuring the early 1950's patrols. I will resize them later and post. They show the model names and so forth.
there was also a 4W70 that is a bigger truck much like the WW2 Dogdes. I will upload pictures of this soon too. it shared the same motor as the Patrol.
I agree it is not a beautiful truck. But to me it holds a special place in Nissan Patrol history and the look of it can grow on you. First time I saw a MQ for example I hated how it looked, now I enjoy them! persoanlly I think the steering wheel is so retro is is hella cool!
I will also post a pic or two of a 4W60 that has been built up so to speak by a guy in Brazil for off-road use.
I have several brochures of the 4W60 on my website in the literature section,
http://www.rmp-o.com/literature.htm and there is also an article from a 1959 Aus Wheels mag about the 4W60 and its recent introduction to the Austrlian market.

That site used to be called 4wdsofcom, and had SHIT LOADS of information on Patrols, multi pages on each model.. It was then bought out and turned into the shithole you see now.
I had more information but lost it in a HD crash..
no probs

fantastic RMP&O.
They bear more than a passing resemblance to Willys/Kaisers of the fifties, don't they ?
Love seeing the old timers, regardless of marque.
Rick.

the 1959 Wheels mag is on ebay right now. This has a short but interesting article on the introduction of the Patrol into Aus a long long time ago. It also has some cool pics of the rig, including off road.
If you are to lazy to search ebay for the mag yourself then I doubt you would even buy it in the first place...but it is an interesting read and worth a few bucks!
I still have not got around to posting more pics because I am very busy and have to find the pics in about 4000 picture files and then resize them for the forum.

oh yea...they do look like an old flat fender Willies. But so did the first TLC and the first Rover.

Mate you've been digging deep for your first post. Welcome to the forum and its good to see you're using the search function but the images are probably gone because this thread is 6 years old and the host website may not even be operating any more.
