In your situation diesel is the better option.

Extra servicing does normally negate the savings achieved in fuel economy and price, however you also have the fact that a diesel engine will last alot longer than a petrol motor built to the same tolerances.
You also have the advantage of having a more capable 4wd in my opinion, no matter what these petrol guys do, they still cant do river crossings like a diesel with a snorkle (newer diesels with electronic injection are just as bad as petrols i hear)
Also resale on a diesel is always better than petrols. My old man is looking for a diesel 80 series and the amount of petrols for sale compared to diesels is a joke, the diesels you do find are usually 6-7 grand more, and even then they dont stay for sale long.
the only plus for a petrol truck is the relatively cheap servicing, and eventual rebuild compared to diesels.
Of course they usually have more power aswell
but then do you want an ss commodore or a 4wd

Yer... don't forget you pay more for a diesel up front, that's the only other thing. It may be a false economy, depending on how long you have the vehicle for.
