96 Pajero clutch replacement problems

Posted here as there isnt much response in the mitsubishi forums and im hoping the problem will be something which isnt mitsubishi related :)

basically a friend is attempting to replace the clutch in his pajero but he cannot get the bellhousing off, it slides apart about 2 cm's but he cant get it any further

as he pulls on the gb and bellhousing it pulls the clutch lever backa swell. pressing the clutch level pulls the bellhousing back toward the geargbox....

is there something simple wrong here

i thaught maybe it could be that the splines are not lined up, but he hasnt had much luck with spinning the tailshaft (gb in gear) to get it lined up

should he try pulling the sparkl plugs and turning the crank?

could it be a siezed spiggot bearing (as someone in mitsubishi forum suggested)

any help will be greatly appreciated, he needs his rig back on the road fairly urgently.

pull bellhousing out as far as you can
jam some wood in between.

depress clutch??

:?

repeat procedure until the seized spigot bearing comes out??

you have got to love the way those spigot bearings/bushes do that, i had an old capella that did this, the worst thing was that the bush was bigger than the cluch hole (of coarse), so i had to undo the pressure plate with the gearbox in place, real biatch

yep as long as all the mounts are undone and there is nothing hitting eg gear sticks, spedo cable etc etc

Sounds like the input shaft is totally jammed in the spigot bearing (which may have collapsed).
Really the only thing you can do is jam some wood in between the bellhousing and block then depress the clutch release fork (may need some generous tapping with a mallet). This will try to pull the input shaft back out of the spigot bearing.
Be careful though you don't want to crack the bellhousing.
If the input shaft has jammed in the clutch plate spline then the same procedure will apply.
Sounds like one of those bastard jobs........................
