An considering turboing my hilux and have done the ring around and of course all have said " yeah its awesome you wont believe the difference " And then i ask about longevity of the motor fuel economy etc etc and am getting mixed replies. So wot are your opinions ??? Do the 2.8's put up with being boosted or are they prone to grenading ?? Also trying to get info on lpg injection, who has had any dealing with that? more power better economy and cleaner too. aparently

Any info or opinions would be great

Cheers John

from memery there was an article in an earlier edition of 4x4 monthly about lpg injection as i am interested in it also from what i can remember it cost about $2000 (i think) you can notice the diference at about 7% gas and your motor blows up at about 25%gas and it is perfect for turbo diesels as you dont need any sort of intercooling . the gas makes the motor run a lot cooler (dont quote me on any of this as i read it quite a while ago)

was that birdy's article?

before his turbo petrol 4.2, he had a turbo gas injected diesel 4.2.

they had a bit of info on it.

gas research australia sell the carby's. http://www.gasresearch.com.au/

the gas is used as an octane booster. from memory diesels burn at a 75% efficiency with the gas injection they burn at around 97% eff. making more power.

the bandag bullet uses a similar theory, except instead of propane it uses Nitrous oxide.

alot of 2.8s are wearing turbos, its pretty straight forward. it shouldnt use any more fuel than it used to (probably less). but when you have more power you usually want to use it. keep the boost resonable and you should have no dramas.

to set the LPG kit up would cost a bit. you also need room for the gas tank. i dont think its really needed. (but if you research, it may be worth it to you)

I remember reading an article about running lpg on a naturaly aspirated 2.8 with genie extractors. Think powerhouse performance were the ones developing the kit.
Anyone know anymore about the powerhouse kit or if there still around.

these engines respond well to turbocharging but all the L series motors right back to the 2.2 litre have big end bearing problems - you might want to consider fresh bearings at the time the turbo goes in, and it is critical to change the oil regulaqrly and use a premium oil.

as for intercooling - sure it's not strictly necessary for mild boost but it's always benefitial. lower inlet temperatures means lower combustion temperatures and exhaust temperatures and that prolongs the life of the engine and turbo.

propane injection works best on direct injected diesels where the fuel, air and LPG are free to mix int he combustion chamber - in indirect injected diesels there is little advantage in terms of power or economy and a lot of potential for damage. it's not worth it.

cheers
