Converting from diesel to petrol. 2L->1ggze

Ok, so the 2L engine is gone and the 6cyl 1ggze is going in to the lux.

Now other than the engine itself does anyone have anything to share in regards to swapping from diesel to petrol. I know I need a fuel pump for the EFI, a ULP restrictor for the fuel filler. For the tacho, I know I can fit an aftermarket one, but is there a way of using my diesel tacho? Marks 4x4 Adpators have some kind of kit for it when doing the commo V6. I am thinking I could use this and modify it. Has anyone done this?

Anyone have some good info from going diesel to petrol?

On the fuel side of things youve got a couple of choices:

1. Modify your tank to suit internal efi pump. Then run bigger fuel lines for efi.

2. Use an external efi pump and surge tank setup. Keep existing diesel lines to supply surge tank pump and overflow back to tank. Run new lines from efi pump to engine, and efi return to surge.

I took option 2 as the easiest. Finding a good place to mount your surge is the hard part. I mounted mine next to my transfer case on the crossmember, not the most ideal location but there aint much room under a bundera. EFI pumps are completely sealed too which means even an external pump will run without problem underwater. BTW my surge tank is a big bugger at 8 Litres.

an eight litre surge tank? that is definately a big bugger! how long are you planning on running your pickup out of the fuel or at high rpm? 60kms?? even with a 2j

5/16" lines will be plenty big euogh for a 1G. VL turbo EFI pump would be the go, with a noisy(but simple/reliable) Facet lift pump and 2-3litre surge tank IF going the external route.

Im guessing you have a 1G series bellhousing off a W55/57/58 to fit up to the G52?? Or using an auto off the 1GGZE?

My Surfs running a 1g-geu in it, I used to run the standard fuel tank with an external pump and never needed a surge tank.
Now I'm running a fuel tank out of a suzuki escudo with a VL non turbo fuel pump and am putting a 2ltr surge tank into it.
I'd say that you will not have to worry about the fuel line.
MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT A FILTER BETWEEN THE TANK AND THE PUMP as its not much fun when they shit themselves in the middle of now where.
As for the rev counter, if Marks make an addaptor for the V6 why won't it work on the straight 6?

hows it going ??

the tacho runs of the alternator in most diesels Or the diesel injector pump

when i fitterd the buick/gmc 4.3litre diesel to my 10/86 lux
i used a 2.8litre 3l diesel alternator & had it moded to work the tacho

so yes ur tacho can be rebuilt/moded to work with the toyota 6cyl

there should be a tacho pulse pick up from ur computer
if so just get ur tacho re calerbraterd to suit

so talk to your local alto elec or gauge specialist

Will be going the lift pump and surge tank method, lot simpler in my opinion. Thanks for the info guys...

I still have to hunt down a flywheel for the engine and some other bits n pieces.

Howdy,
A 3TGTE flywheel/clutch are the same as a 1GGE one, and fit the GZE. They are a 9" clutch plate, but if you can find the 1GGTE flywheel/clutch, they are 9.5" clutch face.

go to the forum at www.toymods.org.au, very usefull for finding toyota parts and info

one problem using the diesel tacho is that they max out at around 5500 rpm and the petrol would be able to rev higher than that.

I dont plan on running it out. I can turn it on or off as i wish. Besides it's a diaphragm pump. The main reason so big in case a little more range was required.

Slowly.

I am doing it after work and on lunch breaks so its taking awhile.

While the truck is off the road I have put in new seats, herculined the interior, new seat belts etc. Done a simple firewall tub on the inner guards etc.

As for the engine, I have collected all the parts I need.

surge tank and pumps.
bellhousing
new clutch
flywheel etc.


Was hard at first as I knew nothing about what I needed, but it all quickly made sense. I have some engine mounts now and will trial fit the engine this week to see how close they line up. The engine mounts are the last major hurdle, then it should all go together.

hi all well i'm thinking about doing the same engine swap latter on with the 1ggze what do i need in the way of parts to make sure it fits.

i would hate to get half way threw putting it in to find out i needed one part or i had missed something.

at the moment my surf is a 2L-t diesel 5 speed unsure of what gearbox i am running i would say it the same as the 4runner one

anyway if someone out their has a detailed list of parts you need to do the conversion and or part numbers this would be great

Its impossible to tell as every vehicle is slightly different.

I had to get longer flywheel bolts today, something I didnt think I would need.

W-55 or higher Bellhousing to match the 5 speed box to the 1ggze engine.
1ggze (1ggte) Starter motor
Manual Flywheel off 1ggte as the 1ggze was an auto.
High pressure fuel pump, lift pump and surge tank for efi
Computer and loom for engine
I also put in a new daikin HD clutch
Engine mounts of some description (will tell you next week what you need)

You never know what you need untill you do it!

Simplest way is to buy a wrecked car with the engine or a half cut, but you can do it cheaper if you hunt around and get everything seperate, but takes lots of time and work!

Also need to get radiator inlet and outlet pipes swaped to other side to match engine.

I travel all over the county side most of the week for work .. another 40Kms on the weekend is not going to kill me ;)

i would look out for a car if i knew what the 1ggze came out of i'm not up with the toyota cars anymore dont have the time as such can you fill me in on what car i'm looking for to get this engine

Its from an import chaser I think. You wont find that engine on the roads here. It also only came out in automatic I beleive, so you will need the manual flywheel off a 1ggte.

Does anyone know if the 1g bellhousing fits the 4a series engine as i would like to fit a hilux box & transfer to my zuk.
The series 3 rockhopper gears in the zuk transfer self destructed after 6 months fitted & are not warranted. :bad-words:

My thoughs were that u can just buy a half cut, im currently thinking of a 7m , manual just buying the half cut cause then you have everything dont you??

The 1g bellhousing wont fit but go to www.toymods.org.au and there was a guy there making bellhousings to fit W5* boxes up to the 4A series motors. This bellhousing will also work with the G5* boxes.

Yes it will as long as the bellhousing suits a W or G series box. If its for the Rseries box then it wont fit. But i think it can be modified to fit still??

Have a look at the trans code on the plate in your engine bay! Post it and we can identify the box, if it is a pre 90 surf probably a G series box, post 90 probably an R series box.

Yeah I got pics of everything. Waiting for pics to work again on here, then I will do a write up on it.

I dropped the engine in on Friday. Mounts line up without any mods at all. Its the first thing thats worked so far!
