box under air cleaner ?????

does anyone know what the round box connected to the underneath edge of the air cleaner on a 60 series is for. if you don't know which one i mean i can post a picture shortly.

its called a sedimentor. It catches all the big stuff like moths and water and bigger dirt particles. Every so often it is a good idea to pop the clips and empty it out.

i am wanting to install an oil catch can and i am thinking that i could convert it into one by plumming the rocker cover vent to a fitting i add to the bottom and then stuffing the container full of steel wool.

What do you think.

The only problem you have with doing this is that the sedimentor is before the air filter. Oil will fill the air filter and it will also get contaminated by dirt and other large items.

How much blow by do you have to warrant an oil catch tank?

I have enough to warrant a oil catch can. the blow by is amplified by the fact that i have a turbo. i might make a separate one and then judging how much oil mist comes out of it will define whether i plum it into the intake or not. At the moment the rocker cover vent just goes to the air.

sambo,that pipe should run to the inlet manifold just above the throttle body you should see a stubby little inlet pipe pointing towards the rocker cover theres an s shaped pipe conecting the two

yes i am aware of that but i have a turbo fitted and i didn't think that the rocker cover should be pressurised to 10psi when the turbo winds up.

Or is this ok.

No, you cant pressurise your crankcase like that. It needs to be plumbed into the intake before the turbo, somewhere where there is a vacuum that will suck the vapour away.

It wont hurt your car having a little extra oil vapour coming through the throttle body.

when the oil vapour passes through the turbo some of it condenses and collects at the bottom of the compressor housing slowly filling it up with oil. i would rather take some of the oil out of the mist in an oil catch can.

sounds like you got a ring sealing problem :?
You could probably try to drain the catch can thru a T piece in the turbo drain into the sump because of the constant flow and being lower.Provide you make the catch can properly.

Does it actually use much oil? Or does it just seem like there is excessive oil vapour coming out of the breather?

What you could do is install a little filter like a clear platic fuel filter between the rocker cover and the air intake. This will allow the crank case to breathe and also catch the oil. If you install it vertically, when the vapour congeals, it can flow back down into the engine when it cools.

it doesn't use much oil now that the rocker cover vent is to the air.

previously it went to the inlet before the turbo, onto the side of the throttle body, when the turbo wound up the turbo would suck air and oil straight out of the rocker cover. it would blow grey smoke (burning oil). now that the vent goes to air it consumes minimal oil.
