iam just wondering if there is any one that has put a turbo in a 2.8 hilux and if they have had any troubles with it and what kit was it.
My lux has about 230000 on the clock some places say i need a rebuild and others say no as long as i hay good compression and new injectors and i should be allright so i dont who to trust

Do a search and you should find a heap of info on this mod as it's fairly common. btw welcome to OL. I put a DTS kit on my 2.8 about 4 months ago with a 2 1/2 inch exhaust straight trough and it runs great. Got it tuned by a diesel specialist so it runs properly. I am led to believe that they can lean out if you don't at least turn the fuel up a bit. My 2.8 had 60thou on it when I put it on (had been rebuilt by Toyota at 130thou) and it goes great. I'd have better fuel economy if I didn't keep my right foot down.

thanks phippsy i think that i will put the turbo on cause the 2.8 is going to find it hard to move the set of 33 jungle trekers thats going on next week :D

I sold phippsy his turbo and I can tell you now that a turbo is one of the best things you can do to a 2.8, once you have it you will kick yourself for having not done it sooner.

If you`re going 33`s I`d also budget for 4.88 diff gears in the seeable future as it all but brings the final gearing back to standard.

by the same token, could one of you guys with the turbo setup post up a few pics or PM them to me of your engine bay, more importantly the turbo setup. i posed the question of a turbo on mine ages ago, and im still keen, just a little dodgy on doing it myself, and whats involved. i got brand new injectors about 1000 Kms ago, so i should probably do it soon.

thanks team.

im looking at doing the same thing to my 2.4 desiel with a factory turbo setup. mine has 225 000 on the clock and a mechanic mate suggested doing the head gasket just for peace of mind. i was wondering if the turbo desiel hiluxes came out with bigger brakes than the non turbo ones and if i'd have to do the upgrade for engineering?? im running 33's at the moment and hoping the turbo has enough balls to turn 35's with standard 4.5 diffs. sorry bout the hijack but i was gona post one anyway.

Our lux recently clocked up 270,000kms (92 2.8D) and im keen to turbo it when i get my hands on it this christmas or next.

Head was completely overhauled @ 250,000kms when the gasket went.

Now has new swivel hub seals and bearings- 270,000ks on the original bearings and they are absolutely fine

Considering the original brake pads lasted 200,000kms- gotta love engine braking.

Is 270,000+ kms too many kms to turbo it without a full engine rebuild?
