I like almost everything but stock gears are definitely too high for off road use.
if you lift it 3", put one or two lockers and add a low gearset, it will take you almost everywhere.
if i had to buy another i would go for auto trans.
cheers

Hi Big Steve

I have had my 1999 Jimny since Feb this year. Its an extreme model which has a few extras like tinted rear windows, ABS, Airbags & fog lights etc. Was pretty stock and I have since throw some 215/75 MT & wired up the radio for some play.
Have tipped it on its side during the last outing. She's OK now..
These little things needs: a good lift to keep up with the bigger trucks, bash plates to the transfer for protection, snorkels due to vulnerable air intake RH front corner, plastic bumpers removed cause the mud gets behind them...
I have since made up a double hitch receiver across the front for a bash plate/radiator guard/bull bar unit which can be removed for daily use. Plus bull bars can be outlawed in the future :(
Will look at the bash plate for the transfer box soon then breather hose plumbing.

Wish list:
4" Suspension life (2" is not enough)
2 or 3" Body lift
Snorkel
ARB bar
Diff locks
winch
etc, etc, etc
:?

Surely 2 inches with a 3 inch body lift is enough if you run bigger tires then 215/15.? I would think it better to increase wheel size then suspension lift?

Will definately run bigger tyres after the lift. The 215s are just to let me have some fun right now without spending big yet.

Love the Jimny for round town use, cheap to buy & cheap on the fuel, especially with the current crude price situation...

Hate it for it's poor handling. Guess the OEM shocks are useless anyhow..

Why the Jimny love oh big one?

Pretty sure you won't be getting three kiddyseats across the back.

You never know ;)

A people mover and a small 4x4 may be a wiser mover than a larger 4x4.

Just testing the water

Get both.... A Mitsubishi Delica Spacegear - All Pajero running gear, 2.8 turbodiesel, auto, loads of bling, quite cheap

I thought I was joking, but I think I may actually be serious.

I have an uncle that used to take an mitsubishi L300 4 wheel driving. It was amazing where that thing would go. Sitting right at the font made spoon drains pretty scary though "pull up, pull up, pull up," It felt like you were gonna run face first into the ground :)

the Japanese go all weak at the knees over them an burden them with the worlds supply of chrome and often 35's on outrageous alloys... like this:

www.auto-futura.ru/.../ geolandar_at.html

It appears to be a russian site but the Delica about 2/3 of the way down looks kina cool  I'm pretty sure there is more info from Jap sites. I saw two "in convoy" heading bush somwhere the other day both with big rubber... roofracks, ladders, the whole shebang.

Think of how many parts it could carry

Trail Jimny

I found the wire coming out of the tranny is lower then Serra's and rather exposed. What have you done with yours?

The 3" Lift. How involve is it? From my research, anything above 2" requires: caster correctors, new pan head rods, drive shaft shims etc. Is that right?

Looks like you do not have a winch..how do you manage with that?

Cheers :?

- as i wrote to you before, cut it, re-route it inside the car and connect it to a switch, doing this way you protect the wire and you also get the 2wd/low option

The 3" Lift. How involve is it? From my research, anything above 2" requires: caster correctors, new pan head rods, drive shaft shims etc. Is that right?

- i nave no caster correctors neither drive shaft spacers, i relocated the front panhard bar though, in order to allow more articulation of the front axle.

Looks like you do not have a winch..how do you manage with that?

- i never get stuck!

seriously, i built my jimny for trial 4x4 competitions, which are very popular here in europe, and, in this kind of comps, the use of the winch is not allowed.
when i use my jimny on the trail i usually get a a tirfor with me (manual winch).

Hi @ all,

I am from Austria. My Jimny grew two weeks ago for about 4.5 inches. It will grow about additional two inches when I managed the cuttings for the 31" tyres. More modifications are not allowed in Austria

The suspension is a mixture of Jimny / Vitara OME components and an alloy made body lift gave it additional height. I will post pix as soon as I get a digi cam

Greetings from Austria
Christian

unfortunately i don't build any gear set for vitara's, but if you are interested in the jimny gears please contact me via e-mail.

Steve...if you are still interested in Jimnys...a note of caution....rear seals!!! We blew Stimpys the day before the photo shoot (yesterday) and I've been informed this is a very common problem with them, as well as the crank sensor playing up. Also, don't go cutting holes inthe floor unless you have a new boot already made up (see photos in the mag for the mess it makes when you hit deep water at high speed  )
Good thing is (and yes I proved it AGAIN) Jimnys swim very well - they excel in mud and deep water - and I found the half a yabbie in Stimpy to prove it ;)
Mind you, it took me most of the day to dry out the interior
