YEP!!! ME!! Over here!!! :D

Its brown. Its locked rear. It is body lifted 3". Its on 35z (MTR's no less!!). Flatter than stock springs. ummmm..... what else?? No huge mods. Just bits taken off, and a few gizmos put on. Nothing flash. Its a big fun machine. It doesn't always want to stay upright, but thats got a lot to do with the guy behind the wheel I think!!

PM if you want some details. I have heaps of pics also, here and there, and everywhere..... I can't think of where there are any right now tho  sorry. tired. hungry. tired.....

cheers. Dan

I just put 60 rear springs on the back of my 40 series. Does that count :?:

Enough flex to put the rear on a 44 drum

Thanks. I'm just trying to find any info on running larger tyres than what I've already got, 265/75x16 (32x16). Even my old 7.50x16's used to rub the inner guards out in the scrub, now that I've gone up a size or two its even worse. I would like to know how ppl run 33's or even 35's without wrecking the tyres on the inner guards. Larger offset on the rims or is it spacers???? Remembering I want to keep this legal.(visibly anyhow!)

stepho, dont know much about wheel/tyre combos whats on the old girl was there when i got her. though i,ve never had them scrub the guards and theres still plenty of clearance . Body or suspension lift would probably be the go

Thats just it mate, I've got a susp lift of about 1 to 1&1/2" and small body lift of 1&1/2" already. The tyres still rub. On the inner sidewall of the tyre onto the inner guard when the tyre goes up into the guard.

what sort of rims are you using ? might need wheel spacers to get them out a bit how much room have you got from face of tyre to guard?

Posted: Sun Mar 16, 2003 11:32 pm
by Sixty
The rims are ROH 16x8's. From memory there is probably about 1/2" from the outside edge of the tyre to the outer guard, while I've got a smidge more than that on the inside.
Thought about spacers, but the legalities bugger me up with insurance. :( Mite see how much (& if I can get them up here) a set of bigger offset rims will cost.

1991 FJ62, Third World 1-ton spec originally with a Dana 60 rear axle and longer rear springs (since replaced with an FJ60 axle and a SOA conversion), carb'd petrol engine, the usual.

Here's a shot of the old girl:

ive never understood the dana 60 joke?!?!?!

Thanks, BJ, interesting place you Aussies got here! :)

It's no joke, all Venezuelan-spec FJ60/62's came with an oddball Dana 60, a semi-floater with the differential offset to the driver's (RHD) side. It was a strong axle but a very rare one, so when I started doing more rockcrawling I started to get paranoid about spare parts, and decided to swap it out for a Toyota axle.

Here's another shot of my Land Cruiser, bought it in Caracas, Venezuela in 1992 when it was barely a year old, brought it to the US in 1996. Five countries, 39 US states and a lot of miles, the old girl is tired but still strong.

I always thought this to be some sort of strange joke!! Why would toyota sacrifice thier awesome axle for something else?
What were the specs on the "factory" dana 60? 30 spline? or bigger? brakes? driveshaft? what springs were on it?

cheers

It had very little to do with Toyota itself and a lot to do with the "local content" laws that the protectionist Venezuelan government imposed on Toyota. Basically, to let Toyota sell Land Cruisers in Venezuela, each Land Cruiser had to include a certain percentage of parts made in Venezuela. To name a few, the radiator, hoses, fan, fan belts, brakes, driveshafts, the complete rear axle and a large portion of the interior were all sourced locally.

The Dana 60 axle was made by Danaven (Dana of Venezuela) and had 35-spline inner axles, the differential offset to the right, and all Toyota brakes, albeit the 1-ton version sold throughout the Third World (bigger, wider brakes than those available in America and Oz). The rear springs very were interesting, the springpacks were HUGE, similar to those on 75 cab-chassis intended for mine use, and the distance between the spring eyes was 5.5" longer than the standard springpacks available in USA and OZ.

All in all, a pretty bizarro axle, and one that I ever broke would have sidelined my Land Cruiser (incidentally my daily driver) for weeks while I waited for parts to arrive from Venezuela or were made custom ($$$). It was cheaper, easier and more reliable to swap it for a Toyota axle. Besides, the Dana 60 was a nightmare on the rocks, every time it scraped (much less clearance than the front axle) the rocks would peel back the bottom lip of the differential cover and it would leak 90 wt...

35 spline? Surely you are telling lies?

 you wont break it, so why swap it out 8) !!!

Oh yeah, have you got any pics on it?

Where can i get one? Australia is almost a third world country, and i need some 35 spline action!
