springovers

Hi all, I'm new here, I was wondering what has to be modified after doing a home made springover? ie steering, brakelines etc?
I've got a 1981 "sj 40" sierra (I think) with a Sigma engine 2.6P,fibreglass body, & 31x10.5x15r allterrains. I've just bought it, and from what I can tell, it's bog stock, but with the 31's there is NO travel. I'm on a budget (diy if possible) and want to do all the cheap simple things to improve it's capability before I start spending $$$.

try and find some Old Man Emu 2.5" springs and make some 2" extended shackles out of 3mm U channel and the 31s will fit. Make sure you hammer the seams inside the inner fenders and everything should be good

you seem to know what might need work with a springover anyway. so just do it and see what needs modding as you go along. an anti-wrap bar is also a good idea for an SOA rear. go for it!

Its prettty easy to do....
Need longer brake lines, driveshaft spacers, z shaped draglink and new spring perches..if u flip the ubolt plates u will need to make new shock mounts but

you wont need a trac bar if you keep the load leaf in.

someone I know said something about a calmini lift ??? anyone heard of this?
anyway, to clear things up, what I should have said earlier, the 31's are already on, the body is 1 piece fibreglass (someones tried to make a Jeep, not me), the rear has extended shackles already.
what are z shaped draglink, & anti-wrap bar? I'm not knowledgable about some of these leaf spring mods, having been a TJ Jeep (coils) fanatic for some time.

I have had the z-bar for 12months now with my spring over and it handles just as well as it did when it was stock....
The zbar is basically your drag link bent into a "z" so it doesnt rub on your passenger side springs at full left lock

I'f feel safer in a suzuki with a well-built z-link than in a hilux with a permanently fatigued j-arm anyday of the week

a z-link also reduces the operating angles of your rod ends.
cam, it's hard to see but their doesn't look like there's much bracing on yours?

An american lift that will set you back a fair bit of money. It is a 5" lift good quality but big bucks

NAM that is a pretty bad pic, but it has been braced with box tube and reinforced......i didnt do it myself, paul pisani from GRP did it

calmini kit is 100% bolt-on so would be good to take from car to car every time u roll it or can take it back to stock (the car that is) if u want to sell it
i wrote to calmini a few weeks back and the kit is not ready yet still fine tuning it it costs $999.95 US so it is preaty out there when most guys are buying zooks for half that

the calmini kit has been advertised for sale for about 5 years now so I'd imagine it would be for sale
I have actually seen Zuks with it on so I don't know what kit you are thinking of

the kit is available from 4wd usa here in perth and its a 5" shackle reversal and i think goes for bout $1600 saw 1 fitted here didnt see it flex so i cant tell ya wat its like....

i am talking about a bolt-on spring over kit. not the shakle reverse kit!
wrote to calmini about three weeks a go and the spoa kit is not yet ready
claimed 6.5 in lift on there spoa kit
5in for the reverse shakle kit and 2in or 3 in lift with there other kits

No fatigued j-arm for me! Just welded steering arms and bootie box mounts. Does that mean that I'm ok. Safer than stock?

Keep in mind that Calmini have been bagging SPOA as unsafe for about 6 years. They couldnt sell enough of their SPUA kits so now they have changed their minds

Looks like they tried to copy a CJ3b , there my favorite sheep and white too mmmm.
Because it has a different body might be worth looking at it from a differrent perspective, has it got good clearance for the tires at its present hieght ? are the diffs narrow or wide track ?

nice point was just a good bolt on idea probly to expence for any one here any way $1000 us = $3000 aus with importing

Hi all, sorry I haven't been here lately, work sux (very tired).
ATM I've decided to leave the suspension as is.
I've got a small problem with the transfer case, it's making a regular noise, like a banging or thumping. what could this be? so far I've heard either collapsed bearing, or the chain's stretched and is hollowing out the case. any other ideas? opinions? advice? I think it's in the output shaft somewhere, as when I was towed home, it was doing it even though I had Tcase in N, Gbox in N, and foot on clutch.
It's a regular noise, thump every revolution of driveshaft, starting 30kmh getting worse as speed increases.

Hey Cam,
my first spoa z link was scary, after 12 monthjs of log hopping etc, she bent just a bit, it took about ten turns to full lock to the left and one to the right, from now on ill make sure the bugger is braced good and proper!!!

Seeing as sierra's have a gear driven transfer case ( no chains unless factory a coil sprung sierra or jimny transfer case have been installed ) .. I would seriously doubt a stretched chain. Collapsed bearing not likely .. or it would make alot more noise than just a mild thunk thunk sound.
Have you checked your universal joints ?? Other possibilities are chipped gears t/case or diff. Possibly rear wheel bearings.
Best bet is uni joint though ..
