now that ive almost got mud4b back on the road......

im planning on building a half tube buggy.this will be a comp truck only...no rego...i need something i can drive to its full potential and not have to worry about damaging it but i dont know if i should do a vit or a sierra......

basic plans are...

80s diffs,a-frame front and rear(or 4 link and 5 link?),coilovers,maybe duel cases,at least 40" tyres,front and rear hydro steer....bla bla bla....

also thinking of putting a web cam in the workshop so people can follow the build online....

give some ideas please...

thanks mark

* Vit + SAS + sierra tcase

Pick one ;)

FAWKER :finger:

IM LEANING TOWARDS THE VIT......

the thing is most of the body panels will be gone......so it wont look like a vit......just thinking if the sierra chassis is better to go with...

go vit... do something different  get a LWB one so ya got a bit of length, room for duals, and already got a more powerful engine

webcam sounds pretty cool.. but regular pics are better, more detail. webcam's pretty small, and not real interesting cept when there's close-up movement

thanks dude...i have not had much to do with the cam.....i will be putting pics up as well....

was thinking i could get a v6 vit......but yeah i thought about the duel t-case conversion as i could sell it as a kit.....

but i just like the experiance in doing something like this.......

If its going to be all tube and running 80s diffs It doesn't really matter what you start the project on.

Having said that I'd get a nt zook and keep the firewall and bonnet, chop the rest, extend the frame.

A sierra with 90% of its panels missing to me is a hellova lot cooler than a vit with 90% of its panels missing.

Also with the sierra you'd have the option of bolting/unbolting the windscreen.

i will be using the front half of the chassis....the rest will be made of tube

Exactly so whatever chassis you start with really means nothing.

What engine??

I really like the Uroc Sammy with vit 2.5 in it

Doing the vitara would be a bit different, but it doesnt sound like there's gonna be much left of the car anyway so you may as well start with whatever you can get cheapest (which ain't gonna be a V6 vitara).

Point of doing the vitara is to have the engine and gearbox for the dual tcase mod.

You might get some spin off business with the dual tcase thing... I know antt wants to do that with his LWB.

You could suss out a V6 commodore into vitara... you might be able to get a kit happening based on that too.... so long as you dont keep the Grimace auto

I agree with this statement...

Food for thought and only an opinion.

I say seirra bonnet and firewall. Like Pirate member chris?

What about this fine example of Vitaradom....

He's pulling it all apart again for a cage rear end. Looking good.....

nice.......i can get a v6 vit for not much more than a 2lt or a 1.6 so no matter what i go with its going to be cheap to start with....

think ill go the vit........

love the cammo

When it comes to engineering, and whilst I recognise things evolve as time progresses, I've always been schooled on the concept of 'do it once, do it right'.

To me, if your gonna make a tube oriented buggy, sure use donor items etc, but why compromise the buggies design (or your wallet) by basing the core on a item which will be heavily modified?

Tube frame from front to back.

If you're still keen on the 1/2 donor, I'd go the Vit due the the preffered engine package(s).

never built a half tube buggy.....so ill go that way for now....build up the confidence then make a full tube buggy later...

Do a Vitara and call it "busted CV no more".

More seriously, build the chassis, tube the body and use vitara body bits for character.

yeah i was thinking that, due to the fact that it will be the next string of engine upgrade as the 1.6 is getting hard to find and expensive....

Nissan 1.8........I reckon they are very under rated, which makes them cheap and they have heaps of bolt on goodies

what about an sr20T some bloke in qld did it to a street vit, it was a tight fit but it did fit, and thats alot of power. if not then there are lots of jap import motors that are not too expensive. you can make up a tranny plate to make them fit with the money you save.

just go full tube frame and bolt your vit guards.

The amount of work I will have done on my hilux, new spring mounts up front, new shock towers new rear suspension mounts, new cross memebers. The only thing I havn't replaced is the two main frame rails.

I would start from scratch you you are not limited to the factory setup.

If i was to restart I would go full tube. with mounts to mount my hilux body back on to. Then get full compliance  Street legal, hilux with 80Series axles and 40" MT/Rs so it is all street legal
