autos are good for going up hills but not coming down unless you have the gearing changed :D

thats my experience :D

What do you mean your expenience????
Manual's ar e great as they are lower geared, auto's are good for crawling and mud blasting. Tiptronic is best

autos can be driven down the hills provided you KNOW what you are doing..

Someone posted a thread on that.. something about holding the foot on brake and revvin engine to 1200 rpm and keepin it there, and compression braking will allow car to be driven slowly downthe hill instead of runnin down

The only thing I think manuals are better for is engine braking. Thats an area though that is becoming less important in terms of handling though with EBD or a diff lock.

auto's can have good engine braking, all you have to do is pull it into 1st :D

and not be behind a diesel manual...

I'd go auto, mod the torque converter and throw in crawler gears... best of both worlds.

But realisticly may just have to go manual... that's the joys of looking :D

If you have crawler gears with an auto, it'll go down hills slower than a standard manual.. so get an auto and crawler gears, or dual transfer, and you're laughing..

Yes auto with gear reduction and MQ080s modded torque converter is ORSUM

Happy with the Paj auto configuration.

What added advantage do you get with the modded torque converter above a standard unit with better gearing?

IMHO the harder the terrain, the more you want an auto, (assuming it is set up properly)

The added advantage is my torque convertor does not allow the transmission-wheels to go faster than the given engine speed.

I have 100% engine brakin from my auto - its about 50% slower on most down hill sections but on the real steep stuff its still fairly fast and only bout 20% slower, I usually explain it like this if my car was running pace down hills now it is an easy jog
I am waiting for a crawler box configuration to be made to fit my vehicle so i can have four ratio option (two highs and two lows) after this is done I think down hills will be a breeze and rough rocky terain will be more like a pebbled driveway  as i will be able to crawl it even better than before.

If you want to read about MQ080 torque convertor mod search for "engine and Braking and auto and transmission" it should be there somewhere ow fark that here is the link

Fair enough.. Neither of my auto trucks need that with crawler gears fitted.. I get full engine braking in low 1st with both the nissan box and the t700..

manuals tend to rev there nuts out with too hand on the wheel..
i find it easier to wheel with an auto becasue i dont gota worry bout
gears just focus on the track.

personall with ur 1st to 2nd gear changes dropping the clutch all the time
id recomend an auto for u :finger: (suk a knut)

catch ya Mull :evilbat:

You wont have full engine brakin goin down hill in an auto no matter what crawler gears you have the weight of the vehicle will always work with the standard torque convertor allowing it to slip and the car to go abit faster.
It might not be much in your case (or with crawlers) but it might be a fair bit, you will never really know unless you lock up the convertor to find out :)

Mate, if I went any slower without brakes down steep descents I'd be stopped.. You're welcome to come for a spin sometime and see for yourself, as most people don't seem to believe me due to the hype stating otherwise (I've had this conversation before a few times  ).. but my gu and gq both walk down descents with no brakes at a fraction above the speed of a manual gu with crawler gears.. and slower than standard manuals.. and it doesn't start to run away on me either - it just holds the entire way down..

I don't believe it Link. Next time I'm up you may have to take me for a spin and prove it.

I have had both and love the auto, I have no probs with engine braking with T-case gears and twin cases. SSSSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW.

I understand that you guys are getting enough engine breaking down hill, but what about in high speed situations where you want to throw your car into a corner, can you down shift and still get the same effect?
Carl.

I tend not to put my 4by in them positions.... high speed and offroad = unsafe (in my 4by). But if i have to and the road is a windy one I will usually put the auto into second and have the revs abit higher when a corner come even just letting of the accel is enough to slow the car down quiet quick.
