4 point harness.

Anyone know the rules and regs for race harnesses?

I am sure they might vary state to state. I want to put 4 point harnesses in my lux for every day use. One reason is that I need to change my seatbelts anyway, and might aswell just change to the harnesses in one go. (and I dont want to be told about the hassle of them etc. thats my concern not yours)

Do I have to get them fitted by an engineer etc?

This for a vehicle that will be used everyday so they need to be legit. Also, what are the options for fitting them in a single cab lux, is out through the rear below the window the only way? And if so, where do they bolt to?

You have to add harness's to the car, while utilising the normal seat belts for everyday use, ie have both.

(this is stupid, as a set up harness is safer!)

AFAIK you need an engineers as well to certify the new harness mounts.

for VIC you have to run both seat belt and harness, unless the vehicle was made 1973 or earlier.

CCDA rule 4.1.3 states.......
Vehicles competing in Group B and C Events shall be fitted with four point racing harness for all occupants fitted in addition to the original vehicle seat belts with harness belting that is not frayed or damaged and all mountings shall be secure in accordance with the original vehicle specifications.

It's funny coz I reckon most are mounted to roll bars and how can that be in accordance with origional vehicle specs. Anyway, I'm sure they're not legal to use on the road in Vic, but are way safer. Some have said that you should have a 6 point cage to protect you if you use harnesses, as there is no person movement in the event of an accident, like there can be with seat belts.
If you're gunna put them in, just follow the instructions that come with the harness.

On this subject some years ago a bloke i worked with had an accident in his ford escort. He was wearing his harness at the time thinking it was a safe move. Problem was he went under a tray truck that had pulled out on him. He tried to slide down and duck out of the way as natrual instinct would dictate but this was impossible due to the harness and the car stopped with the side of the trucks tray resting/pressing against his chest, any quicker and he would have been decapitated. Very scary indeed and i would seriously weigh up the merits of using one on the street.

In VIC you can use them on the street but you also have to use the standard belts.

Basicly Tonka just replace the standard belts because even if you have harnesses you still have to use them

Oh and I payed $183 each for mine from Repco, they are cams approved and do not need to be replace every couple of years like many others do. If you have payed more then $220 each for them you have either been ripped or didn`t do enough home work before buying them.

Mine are 4 and have a normal buckle on them just like a standard seat belt does which is the type of buckle you want as they are the quickest and easiest ones to undo / doup.

You can get them in 5 or 6 if your want.

Cheers Guts, but check the date of my original post, I got this sorted ages ago. Someone had just dug this back up.
