Gearing

Excuse my ignorance, but I've read a few posts about putting in lower ratio (bigger number) gears into your pajero's. Is it possible to make low range lower geared without compromising the high range gearing, ie instead of using 1st and 2nd to climb hills, it would be good to be in 2nd and 3rd, or 4th gear.

Yes we developed 2.85 t/case gears to replace the 1.9 standard ratio. These gears will fit all 2.6 & 3.0 V6 Paj's and only effect low range (high range stays the same).
The 3.5 V6 & 2.8TDI have a different t/case (larger) to the above versions but we are developing t/case gears for these also. The ratio that can be achieved is 3.15:1 which is a 60% improvement in low range (high range stays the same).
Hopefully these gears will be available byt the end of this year or early next year.

Hello Frank
I've been following your crawler gears thread for a while now and wonder if the auto set will work/fit with the new DID autos, or is a new design necessary?

Very good question.
We are pretty sure they will fit the 5sp manual versions of the 3.5V6 & 3.2DID but the auto is the new 5sp tiptronic.
I'm yet to confirm that the input gear is the same as the Gen 2 auto's.
The Gen 3 5sp manual is still the V5M31 (as used in Gen 2 3.5V6 & 2.8TDI).
The old 3.5V6 4sp auto is the V4AW3 but the Gen 3 5sp auto is a V5A51 unit and I don't know if the output shafts are the same.
I'm still researching this.
Also I learned that the Gen 3 t/case is electronically activated the t/case lever is remote from the case and sends a signal to a solenoid which moves the shifter rail into the selected position.
This is done by an electric motor with a ratchet/cog type set up on the shifter rail.

Mits made the t/c electrically shifted so we didn'have to bend the lever when we do a body lift!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Frank
I'll await the outcome of your research. I tow an off-road trailer and despite the NP DID auto's great holding ability downhill, there are a few times I would have liked lower gearing. It can get a bit tough on wet clay.

It's interesting that the Gen 3 t/case is different - did you hear that a member of the Qld club had his NP t/case fail? Stripped a gear, IIRC. Mitsubishi replaced it under warranty, with the comment "first time we've seen that..." Maybe there are more differences than the shift arrangement?

Yeah there was one NM in our club to, stretched the chain and it started jumping the cogs doing all sorts of damage. Mitsu replaced it under warranty.
The front of the case is pretty much identical to the Gen 2 versions.
One interesting thing we found is that the Gen 2 3.5 V6 t/cases (both auto & 5sp) don't have backlash eliminators fitted
However my manual on the Gen 3 t/cases shows them fitted
Why do they do this.......................
