Fitting a TH700R4 to Range Rover
My latest plan (likely to change, just like the rest) is to fit a Holden 5.0 V8 with a TH700R4 auto box. I want to go with this box due to its supposed strength, (relatively) low first and the fact that its a four speed. I had a look at Marks web page to see if there is a kit to match this to the LT230 xfer case but it appears there isn't. I would assume that the only adapter required for this transplant would be the gearbox to xfer case as the engine and g/box are straight out of a commodore.
Has anyone put one of these autos into their Land Rover? Are kits available to install one of these?

a guy in brissbane has one in his RR fitted to a 383 stroker.
Dont know where he got the gearbox t/case adaptor from.
THere was a report on his RR in 4wd monthly.
Will find the artical.
I emailed the mag months back to be put in touch but no reply.
i believe it would be a great box in there. ZF 1st is around 2.5-1 and the t700 is around 3.4-1 perfect.

t700
first gear is 3.06:1 in a t700
t700 is wide and therefore you must push an lt230 back a long way for the front output to clear the pan, BW tcase is a different story because of its shorter front output housing.
for the 0.5:1 difference over a zf the t700 isnt worth the trouble. zf is just as strong, just as upgradable and you dont have to frig with the electronic controls of the t700 plus there is plenty of off the shelf adaptors for chev/holden/buick to zf.
If you really want a t700 why dont you use a toyota hilux tcase reduction section between it and the lt230. Will push the 230 back far enough to clear the pan and you get dual tcase and ~80:1. adaptors are available to to mate the t700 to the hilux case and the hilux to 230 adaption isn't that hard...

yes I went for the ZF after the LT77 dropped its bundle straight bolt in very easy all parts were supplied with the box.
Wife loves driving it now.

I just finished doing the same about 3 weeks ago!!
Different beast to drive with the auto and new suspension/new engine.
What speed does yours drop into top gear? Mine is shifting into fourth at about 65 and dropping back to about 1500 revs, wondering if this is adjustment of the kickdown cable or cause im running 1.4 high and 32's with the auto. How's yours with the hilux diffs and what ratios/tyres size you running?

Has anyone modded a ZF and if so what was the result? My main concern with going to an auto is lack of engine braking. I know i could:
a) change diff ratios - maybe
b) maxidrive x/case reduction - bit $$$
c) chuck in a TH700r which has much lower first.
I'm not wanting to spend too much money because i don't see the point in spending lots of money on something that gets thrashed/trashed on the weekend.

Be a lot cheaper in my opinion to go with the zf and maxi gears.
You can get every thing required to fit it from toorak tractor or the other RR parts guys.
Toorak tractor the cheapest around 900-1200 complete including pedal, gear leaver and oil cooler with hoses all genuine RR/Disco. Floor panel plate as well.
All bolts in no mods drive shafts fit.

putting a t700 into a RR is not going to be cheaper than maxidrive gears, it will only give you 36:1 in low with standard diff ratios and the maxi tcase will give about 39:1 with a zf and 3.54 diffs.
with 4.11's, t700 = 42:1, maxi tcase = 46:1
with 4.7's, t700 = 48:1, maxi tcase = 51:1
the maxi gears drop straight in, the t700 wont. you may have to cut the floor pan in order to push the tcase back far enough, youll need new driveshafts, youll have to clearance or remanufacture your cross member to clear the front shaft, youll have to deal with the shifter and electronics issues, speedo issues ie t700 electronic/rangie not, you will have to fab an adator and spud shaft or have them made by someone like hadfield @ $60/hr, all adds up to $.
The only problem with the maxi gears is you have a much bigger step between high and low range which can cause problems in some situations.
Ritter automotive has a kit to adapt the t700 to the bw case in a RR. Last time I checked it was over $2k and the BW case isnt much chop.
main mods for zf's that I have heard of is using parts from the varient used behind V12 jags like clutch packs etc for more strength. as far as I know there is not options for a lower first like in some of the ford and gm autos.

BUT a ratio change to 1.4:1 or 1.66:1 for high range while your maxi gears are going in doesnt add much more, about $1000? so for 3-3500 youre done, high range for your bigger tyres and the low range gearing you want, provided your axles are currently up to what you want to do.
Doing anything about gearing is going to cost you $, its $1000 just to get in the game and rises in $1000 increments...

hilux to 230
hilux to 230 adaption, ever seen a marlin 'toybox'?, same principle.
-make a new output shaft for the hilux box that is 10 spline
-make adaptor plate that houses the bearings for the rear of the hilux tcase (30mm thick, toy case clocked 7 deg off vert)
job done
you can make a doubler for a Rover with a zf-230 combo that is only 105mm longer overall. so with a 2" bodylift to clear the handbrake drum on the 230 you dont need to modify the floor in a RR.
