My Rangie gets about 500ks to an 80l tank on the highway. About 300k to a tank in the city. (On petrol)

Not sure about gas.

I'm not sure if they'd be the greatest first car. Mine is not my daily driver, and I wouldn't own it if was. It's heavy, slow (by modern standards) and has a few "quirks" that I think would annoy me if I had to drive it every day.

That said, I reckon they've got a lot going for them - coils, a no-nonsense V8 with a carby that will work upside-down and full-time 4WD to name a few.

However, if I was to consider a cheap first car for a 4b, I'd get a leafy zook and weld the rear diff.

first car = 2door rangie

It depends somewhat on how many k's the car has done .If its tired you may use25-30lt per 100k's.Ifit has had a rebuild and and is in good tune you will use betwwen15-20lt.The gas will get chewwed up around 25% faster but it is greater than 25% cheaper.

If you get rid of the twin carbs and go with a 2brl you can get reasonable economy. When i put a 350 holley on my rangie, i was getting 22mpg, and then with dual fuel it didnt really matter with lpg. best i got on 70ltrs lpg is 370klms.

I get between 240 and 300 km per tank of gas (60L useable) in my 79 4.4.

It seems there is different "types" of gas.
Even getting gas from the same servo, there is a difference in fuel economy.

get a zuke. For a while I almost gave up on having a fourwheel drive for a first car but then I started looking at zooks. Now I own onedont let their size fool you they are not a soft roader. . cheap to buy cheap to maintain and cheap to run. I get 300-330 kms for 30 litres of petrol.

A zook can tow, but not big stuff.
My mate tows his 14ft boat with no problems.
Doesn't set any land speed records, but hey, it's not a race car!

If you're worried about the price of petrol, run the Rangie on gas.
As I said, I get 240-300Km from 60L.
That equates to about $20.

I've just moved from an unlocked Vitara to a locked/lifted Rangie. It's so capable it scares me - the Rangie's well in advance of my capabilities as a driver now.

It all depends on where you want the lpg tank, if you fit it in the cargo area then any system off a ford or holden will work, you can pick them up for $50 - $500. I picked up a complete systm off ebay for $50- 92ltr tank, converter, mixer , lines and locks and the tank had just been retested for another 10 years of service.

I got a kit off a disco and fitted it for around $200 in parts by the time it was all said and done

A mate just got a kit from a jeep and it will cost him around $300 in
parts + what he paid for the kit.

The thing with this is that the ignition system needs to be 100% otherwise it won't work properly. If you get a dunga old rangie expect to replace plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor and points - that will be $150.

geees i thought it would be around 500 min for a tank setup, my mate has just brought another rangie, for 650 bucks, air con, pwr steer, gas and everything actually works, his gas tank is internal , and i doest take up all that much room i supose, i am thinking of buying his old one off him, at the moment there is more oil under there than araq!!! the rear main seal needs replacing, is it alot of work, or is it a job for the carport and me and my dad?

It will cost that much by the time you get a kit and then have to get all the bits for it to make it work on the rangie.

What I meant to say is

Cost for me when I had a kit off a rangie
$300 for kit + $250-$300 in extras so = $550 to $600 for my setup

Cost for the first time I put gas in my 2 door
$250 for the kit (trading post) + $320 for bits for a carby V8 + $140 for ignition bits to get the system up to scratch = $710ish
