Outer Limits 4x4 Board

has anyone upgraded cooling on a Disco by mofifying the stock fan/fan clutch or radiator?

the easiest way is to upgrade to a rangie 4 core rad costs a bit mor but 45' temps are no worry

we've been looking at custom fitting twin 16 electric thermo fans to our disco, but thats cause we think it may save some fuel (not engine driven) and we can switch em off for water crossings. We're yet to fit them yet though due to lack of funds.

Apparently its quite common for the radiators to corrode or clog up so maybe a radiator service will help if its actually overheating problems that are effecting you.

If I had money I would get a custom four core aluminium radiator built that had shrouds built in to take the twin thermo fans and aircon fan.

the al rads are better for cooling but had to tow my mate back to wiilina pound when we were last up at the finders if she was a copper core i could have soldered her up at our camp
hence my preference to copper cores essppecially is you are going outback

You would no pick up much fuel economy, the stock cooling systems run really well as long as the radiator is good. You should have the radiator cleaned out every 5 years and you won't have any problems.

Fair enough. We just assumed that the engine driven thermo fans sucked up a bit of fuel because you definately notice the power drop when they come on. Also during winter, when the fans barely kick in our fuel consumption drops almost 1 litre per 100.

Fair call I suppose, I just wouldn't play with the cooling system - heaps of people put electric fans on their car and then have problems with running hot. There are two things to keep in mind,

1. Electric fans need a full shroud
2. The car should not need a cooling upgrade if everything is in good shape.

Having said that HSV Rangie runs electric fans on his 5.0L RR and they run fine, however that is because he has no other option

As far as picking up economy, I suppose you have to judge whether it is worth the expense of converting for the saving in $$

The reason you maybe get better economy in winter is denser cooler air into the intake, more power as well.
