GQ Auto probs.....and V8 conversion?

My Mav is an 89 model, and has 260km on the clock. In the last month or so, the mav has been really slow to engage reverse. You can start the car, then select reverse, then nothing happens for a minute or too, till the box heats up a little. It will free rev untill then.
What are the possible causes for this?
I HAVE checked the auto oil levels, and the oil isn't too dirty either.
any help appreciated.

Are the bands adjustable? I wasn't too sure. I am fitting a new valve body this week. Can the bands be adjusted when the valve body is out? I really don't want to have the auto cracked open, coz I aint got 2K for a rebuild.

Are there any other possible reasons for this happening? I don't really want to spend that much

you probably wont have a choice... and that price is cheap...

Ok. Here are my options. Any opinions would be appreciated.
1. Rebuild auto, or second hand auto....$750-$2500
2. VN V8 motor with adapter to TB42 auto with above options.
3. VN V8 and TH700 with adapter to TB42 transfer. ( i would need to open the TH700 anyway to fit the new output shaft so this would be spending money twice.
i do alot of towing, and would love more power. I favour option 2. I have done an engine conversion recently, so I understand there are alot of hidden costs, but if anyone has done this particular conversion, and could give me some do's and don'ts I would appreciate it.
I was thinking around the $5000 mark for the VNV8 and adapters, fitting, and secondhand TB42 auto. (assuming I purchase a complete V8 Vn with all the bits)
Is this realistic?

Shane H on the GQ forum, finally got his V8 sittin in the engine bay last night, and send me some photos. But he is replacing a V6 that he had in there before, that replaced a V8 that did a crank.
Also your gearbox rebuild prices are cheap. Dude in our club had his done cost him $4000.

I have a vn v8 behind my auto at the moment everyone is having trouble with the lock up or overdrive im in the process of figuring it out nearly there if you use the nissan auto you will need the extreme valve body installed once this is in the gearbox will hold up too around 450kw with out this the nissan gearbox will need another rebuild if your going to use the holden gearbox make sure you make sure the gearbox wil handle what improvements you will make to the engine let me know if you need to know more cause i have this with the nssan box
