Oh well, I suspected this would happen......... :2gunfire:
Oct 93 V8 Disco.
Now, I can spend a couple of g's getting this one rebuilt, or......

Anyone have any ideas about what I could toss in from a later model car?

I just can't bring myself to spend good money on something that's never gonna be a good thing.........

Thanks Michael, hope you don't mind if I pick your brains over this gearbox query.
Do you know what years/models/vehicles the R380 is/was fitted to?

Am I better off getting the entire gearbox and t-case assembly from this vehicle or am I better just getting the box and bolting it to my transfer case?
Appreciate your help.

Alex

R380 from behind a v8 disco will fit and you can use your transfer case. Make sure that you get all the linkages brackets etc. You will have to modify transmission tunnel because position of shift levers is different.

Don't get an R380 from a defenders or diesel disco. Defenders bell housing and input shaft is too short to go in a rangie. Diesel R380 has larger diameter and different splines for the rangie clutch plate.

AFAIK, later R380 (1999 and later) has larger bearings - someone else may be able to correct me on this.

R380 shifts better than LT77 and has improved bearings (the weakness of LT77). Strength of gears is about the same for LT77 and R380, but gear strength is reduced in any gearbox when the bearings are worn.

I have a LT77 for sale, but it is still in my rangie and I dont want to pull it until I have a buyer for the motor. The LT77 in good condition - had bearings, seals and mainshaft was replaced a few months ago and the gears were found to be in good condition. Reason for sale is swapping to engine to 300Tdi (and gearbox to match diesel).

Well, that sounds like the go.
So I should start hunting for a V8 petrol Dosco manual gearbox from a 99 model.
Are we sure it will bolt to my t-case, or am I better off just getting the whole assembly from a 99 model and throwing my 93 stuff out the window?
Thanks guys, asking these questions saves a hell of a lot of hammering and angle grinding on my part!

There is no difference between LT230 for LT77 and R380 as far as mounting to gearbox is concerned. High/Low lever is different on R380.

There are other differences between models such as high range ratio, speedo drive, mounting holes for brackets etc.

I suggest you use your existing LT230, but while it is out make sure it has the cross drilled input gear. Also consider fitting one-piece shaft from Jack Mac for centre diff bevel pinions.

When the transfer case is separated from the gearbox, there are some dowels that stay either with the geabox case or the transfer case. Make sure that you have all of the dowels and don't try bolting back together with a dowel in both at the same location.
