who runs a 1.3 head on a 1.6 bottom

so who has any experience with this?

i want to stay carby, better.... and was thinking about a 1.3 head on the 1.6 bottom/block.

whats the go? can do or not? i was told its a good mod for staying carby, as its only the head thats different.
also, i was told that i can up the compression with the 1.3 head. true or not?

i've also seen some gti heads, twin cam, but efi.

my mate is going to run a holley carb on his engine, so i'll have to wait until it gets back on the road to see how that goes.
(atm, its a 1.3 head on a 1.6 bottom end, all carby, and revs HARDCORE! 6500rpm is all he takes it up to, but can go more, maybe with a bang as well.)

i hope someone can help me out, and if anyone has a link to a previous post, could you please post it here, i'd like to know more about this.

theres 2 seasons up here, dry and wet.

dry is dry, and wet is very wet.

from experience, in water, the less electrics, the better, and so i want to stay carby, more simple.

anywhere else in aus, i would have gone efi already, and maybe supercharged.

but up here, theres only mud to play in, and thats only for half a year.

I guess the vit 1.6 would be more of a "Coversion" thn simply modding a 1.3

I have just purchased a new g13 to put in my zook so I can pull the current one out and fit the head to a vit bottom end.

I get to use my carby (rebuilt), my headers and more.

Yeah but this bloke is talking bout doing the 1.6 EFI conversion but using the 1.3 head to retain the carby fed intake. Pointless when a good carb 1.6 could be had instead.

So the bottom end shouldn't matter, I'm searching for a bottom end and have only found efi bottom ends.

Yeh but whats gets me is what advantage is there using the pissy little sierra carb on the EFI 1.6 when it would be easier, and most probably cheaper, to just buy a Carby 1.6 in the first place!

There are bottom ends for $300 Pretty sure there is no difference between the bottoms ends of the EFI & Carb 1.6's

For some of us who choose to spend our money on gearing rather than engine HP is not a priority, I merely want a little more herbs for pushing 34's at 100kms & something that looks 1.3 when you open the bonnet.

I have already put $200 into my carb, ad the cost of extractors and other anciliaries, a $300 bottom end is a bargain vs a whole vit engine

Comparing the 1.3 carb to a 1.6 and calling it "pissy little" seems abit of an overstatement to me.

Love mud had this setup with his 1.3 head and 1.6 carby reworked and by all accounts it worked really well.
He'd be a good one to ask about it.

ok, i dont know whats going on here, but all i want to know is:

who runs a 1.3 head on a 1.6 block/bottom?
still using everything the 1.6 carb had, only just the 1.3 head.

LOVE MUD's done it. gwagonsteve too???


does this work? reading the posts, obviouly it does.

is this a good idea/mod for a bit more torque? i dont need/want it to rev high, just the power to the ground.
(why? i won't be going transfer gears or duals for a while, and plan to be running some bigger rubber, but maybe not soon.)

what is involved? is it straight forward? i think it is.

1.3 head with 1.6 valves I think it was and some port work.

the 1.3 head on 1.6 will give better compression ratio, but if that is your goal then you can always shave the 1.6 head anyway.

There's gotta be more to it than just the comp ratio.... what other differences are there in inlet port angles and stuff?

I dunno... maybe guy does.

The 1.3 head has several advantages over the 1.6 head, the 1.3 head stands up to high RPM much better than the 1.6 head (the rocker gear is prone to breakage on the 1.6 heads at sustained high RPM)
On mine I ran 1.3 intake valves with 1.6 valves in the exhaust side.
The reasoning behind this was the 1.3 intake valves allow for better air velocity at low engine speeds making good torque from low RPM's, But the larger exhaust valves still allow good flow at high RPM's.
I had a bit of head work done as far as porting etc was done, had the head port matched to the intake and exhaust to make the best of the gas flow.
The carb also had a larger jets installed.. sure ecomony sucked but it sure went well for a 1.6 ..

how much did your set up cost you? i take it u used the original ex valves from ur 1.6 head, and put them in the 1.3 head. can you explain the exact details of what you did regarding the head work? how much did this set you back?
and also, are you running the 1.6 mikuni carb, just with bigger jets? how much was this?

The carby mods would make a big difference to any old crappy 1.6 carby floating around too....

The head mods were about 250 to 300 ( was a while ago) I used a 1.3 head with new valves (Only about $8 each from memory) I had it all done at the same time I got it cheap as the guy did it as inbetween work and took a few weeks.
The 1.6 carb was a standard vit unit on a 1.3 intake I think I matched the carb to the intake I cant quite recall..
The jets were supplied by the same guy that did the head he said that they would "suit the mods" he had done .. I also had the cam reprofiled for low to mid range torque.


In all I think I spent about $450 or so .. but the motor needed a new head as the old head had a leak so in my mind it was worth it .. I suspected that the bottom end would let go after that .. but despite my best efforts it always held together :D

how much more power did you get over the standard motor? what is your compression ratio now? (if you know)

more so, how is the torque?

i want to do some engine work, but is it worth the money and trouble when you have a perfectly ok gutless engine? would you or anyone reccommend this type of engine work? it seems simple enough to me, within limits.

never dyno'd it so I have no idea how much more power it made, but it would eat my freinds stock Suzuki with 1.3 and standard rubber running when I was running a series 1 rockhopper and 35 claws (a true 33).
It would sit reasonably easily on the illegal side of the speed limit only needing 4th on most hiway hills to stay at 100Kph ..
The torque was pretty good, but never having driven other similar vehicle's it;s hard to say ..

Al I can say is if I had another Zuk with the same type of motor is that I would do it again .. (especially if the head needed rebuilding anyways) but the next time I would do Efi as carbs do tend to suck somewhat once you get decent traction ..
