Does anyone know if the axles and CV's out of a 92 Sahara will fit into a 96 DX model.
I thought I was told some time ago that one of the sahara axles was shorter or something because of the factory locker setup

Is it true that the CV's out of a Sahara are longer than one out of a DX? The Sahara is full time and I thought in 1995 the full time 80's went to longer CV's due to drive plate wear problems .

Gday
The c/v was made longer when the twincam was brought out in 8/92. With the thicker drive plates, and longer c/v shafts, came larger discs. Everything is interchangeable, so longer c/v and later drive plates can be used on pre 8/92 cruiser, with or without the latger discs and callipers.
(std, gxl and Sahara are thesame length c/v till 8/92)
After 8/92, all dx's and std's kept the short c/v and free wheeling hubs, but all constants got the longer splines (because of wear problems)
Now the Sahara short axle will be different lengths to the rest because of the loka arrangement...
For what its worth, i run FWH with my long series c/v's after putting a dx transfer in, and there doesnt seem to be a problem. So i think it would be ok for you to run long c/v's aswell.

Thanks, Andrew. Wow, you guys Down Under sure get the improved bits earlier than anyone else, LOL.
Does the FWH from a std. or a DX fit the GXL or Sahara? Doesn't the CV sticks out farther?
Cheers,
Dave

Gday Dave
For those who dont know, the American market gets Hilux type rear axles and drums on all but the loka 80's, however, their base model is equivalent to our top model in cabin specs minus the lokas.
The free wheeling hubs go straight on from a 60 series or hilux (minitruck) i put a couple of gaskets under it to minimise the 3mm or so of slop...if you have ABS on your cruiser, dont do it, or u will damage the sensors on the swivels.

Have seen the CV bell chew into the inner housing when it floats and damage where the inner axle seal is located. Ive put extra "C" to hold the CV out but you cant put it in the correct position otherwise the FWH cover wont fit on ( that with toyota FWH's ) With the AVM hub i don't believe its a problem. A have machined new grooves in the CV outer and cut 8mm off the end to make it the same as the DX model CV.
