GQ front end noises.....

G'day all,
I had a look at a GQ tonight that I'm interested in buying, which overall is really tidy, engine/trans wise seems to run and drive really well, but when I engaged 4WD (has auto locking front hubs) it makes a dodgy CV sounding noise. I could not feel any physical vibration, and it was not really a dead CV grinding noise...more like a clicking coming from the hubs or something......
....any of you guys got any ideas on what it might be? the salesman is taking is puting it into Diamond Valley 4x4 (mechanic) tomorrow morning for their diagnosis.

is it like a click only when turning or when in a straight line?

both......actually the geeza just rang me back, saying he spoke to the a mechanic already this evening and was told that you have to manually lock the hubs in? although on the hubs it seems as though there's nothing to lock and it has auto written there?

even if you put it in 4wd with the hubs unlocked, there shouldnt be noise, do the hubs have AUTOMATIC written accross them, or is there a bolt in the centre, with auto and lock with 2 arrows?

just at a quick guess, the auto ubs have shat them selves as they do, my old man had the same ones on his GU and they were locking and unlocking while onroad, causeing horible noises, get them to replace them before you buy it, and see what difference it makes

Sounds like the Auto hubs are about to let go.
A set of free wheelers is wot yer need.
AVM, WARN,.........try all 4x4 Kotara (Newcastle) get a bewdy tough set for $240

thanks guys
been doing a bit of searching elsewhere on the net tonight also and this seems a pretty common story on GQ's. Will try and get the pleb to install some free wheeling hubs instead of the nissan autos before I sign on the dotted line.

If you are doing a lot of mud work the aftermarket hubs have poor seals and you will find yourself going though a few sets of wheel bearings.

AVM come with gaskets, but if you were on the ball, youd use some gasket goo and seal em up real good.

My concern is with the poor seal in the twist lock at the end of the AVM
and SUPERWINCH hubs.Unfortunatly Warn don't make GQ Patrol hubs, cause there's no Patrols in the States maybe.?
Both of the above hubs are made in Brazil,posibly in the same factory,which puts them on a par with Wranglers and Beetles.
Lately I have been sourcing ORA hubs from Ripco,Taiwanese and they
seem to be a better hub.
